I've never seen gel-filled rests before - sounds like a great idea! I'm glad I could help out a bit.

I work for orthopaedic surgeons, and the office isn't ergonomically set up at all. Your advice is all terrific. I've also found that the gel-filled rests for the keyboard are great. I have two and I keep them in my freezer. If my paws are bothering me I whip one out and rest it next to the keyboard and it feels just wonderful for my wrists. The biggest problem is they defrost so fast. Anyway, thanks for all the wonderful advice.

Ugh. For me, it's that my body is hyperreactive. I get eczema on my fingertips if I do dishes, and there are maybe two antibiotics I can take without having a potentially life-threatening reaction.

Yeah, the doctor tried to tell me to stop typing. I would have loved to, really. But my alternative was moving back home with my mother. I love my mother, but that would have been a serious drain on her resources, and if we're in the same house for more than a week we drive each other totally insane (we talked about it, though - for a while we thought we'd have to do it). Besides, writing is my life.

It's very easy for someone who isn't living your life to say "oh, just stop whatever's hurting you." It's much harder for you to actually do it. About the only job I'd be getting that didn't involve any lifting, writing or typing would be working as a cashier, and my digestive problems don't allow for not being able to run off elsewhere at a moment's notice. So much for that option...

Ouch. Not fun.

Yeah, doctors will tell you to stop typing, or doing whatever else it is that has damaged you. There's one reason I didn't give that suggestion: it's usually financially impossible to do so. But the financial strain of paying for a keyboard (or whatever) so that you don't have to stop working is another matter entirely - it's necessary. Glad to hear yours is doing better!

Then all of my random editorials have been worthwhile, if one could help someone! I'm so glad to hear you'll mention it to your doctor. It is a much more serious injury than most people think! L.et me know how it goes, and I hope you've caught it in time!

Thank you for the kind words!

Have you given wrist braces a try? Again, not because they particularly help your wrists, but because they make a huge difference in how people treat you.

Kind of sad that it's necessary, mind you...

I see my doctor tomorrow about other things, and wasn't planning on mentioning this one, which is not bad -- now. Bless you! and the timing you rode in on!

(The above written on a keyboard in my lap for the first time ever. Thanks again.)

Thank you for writing what I've also been saying for years - go to the doctor at the FIRST sign of pain. I also have tendonitis, and if I had gone when it was only one finger, maybe I would have some grip strength left! Because it doesn't show, people don't think it's real - and other folks don't take it seriously, either. Great article, with many points people need to hear!

Every little bit helps!

If you can figure out what's causing it, that can help greatly to determine treatment. In my case, getting a keyboard which eliminates the need to extend fingers or wrist was the appropriate thing. If mousing is what's hurting you, then a different kind of mouse or a wrist-rest may be good.

Thank you for the kind words!

My new mouse pad... (Reply to this comment)

has helped alot. I recently purchased one with built-in wrist rest. This has helped with the frequent pains I was experiencing from extended computer use.
I thought your review was great! Computer-related ailments can be serious!
