You ask me. Why yes, this silly dyke just couldn't narrow her films down to just ten. Within this opinion I will share with you, the (probably heterosexual) reader, my top twelve picks for the best GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender) films of the 90's. Unlike others, my top picks go beyond just what was released in the theaters. My picks come from documentaries, TV movies, foreign films, and yes, even some of the big theatrical releases. 12. Foxfire. Foxfire is one of those lesbian films that you know is a lesbian film, but it never actually calls itself a lesbian film. Foxfire never even uses the words "gay" or "lesbian" in the movie. Based on the novel by Joyce Carol Oates, this movie follows the friendship of a group of girls suspended from school together. The main lesbian themed focus in the movie is the friendship between characters Maddie (Hedy Buress) and Legs (Angelina Jolie in the role that brought her the lesbian audience she has). Also is the film is out actress/model Jenny Shimizu. Foxfire is more than a lesbian film though; it's also an all around chick flick. 11. The Truth About Jane. For those of you unfamiliar with this movie, it's a Lifetime movie production. You know, Lifetime...television movies for women. Well, the movie is about high school freshman Jane (who incidentally is 16. I guess Lifetime didn't work out some of the kinks in the plot). Basically the movie is about Jane's coming out as a lesbian and the way her family deals with the experience. Although cheesy, a lot of what happens in the movie to Jane happens to a lot of teenagers. Her coming out to her parents in the film, as well as the way she is treated by her peers is pretty accurate compared to other real-life coming out experiences. For this reason, The Truth About Jane is one of my top picks. 10. Gia. Gia is yet another one of those films that helped Angelina Jolie acquire her lesbian following (not to mention a Golden Globe). This HBO production is a biography of the life of model Gia Carangi. Although the accuracy of the film has been disputed, Gia manages to show the viewer the results of drug abuse and the ravishes of AIDS. Gia, who has been called a lesbian, slept with both men and women (as is shown in the movie). Angelina Jolie beautifully acts the role of Gia. Every time I see the movie I still cry at the end. 9. Better Than Chocolate. Better Than Chocolate is basically nothing more than a romantic comedy. Maggie (Karyn Dwyer) falls in love with Kim (Christina Cox). Problems arise when Kim's mother comes to stay with them and doesn't know they're together. Throw in a transgendered woman named Judy who sings the song "I'm Not A F****ing Drag Queen" and you've got yourself quite a movie. I chose to include this film in my list just because there aren't many romantic comedies out there for the gay community to watch. 8. All Over Me. All Over Me is probably my favorite lesbian film in the entire world. This movie is about a girl of fifteen who falls in love with her best friend. I probably just like this movie because it hits home. I mean as a young lesbian I went through nearly the same thing myself and can just relate to movie. Mix that with the fact that Leisha Hailey (Gush/The Murmurs) has a role in the film, and you've sold me for life. 7. Boys Don't Cry. Boys Don't Cry is the big screen adaptation of the story of murdered transgender Brandon Teena. The facts in this movie have been twisted a bit, but so many issues are addressed in this movie, I couldn't ignore it. Hillary Swank won an Oscar for this movie and boy did she deserve it. Boys Don't Cry isn't a light movie. It's deep and hard hitting, and do be quite honest, I left the movie feeling sick. You don't see many movies that hit you like that. 6. Ma Vie en Rose (My Life In Pink). Can you tell this is a foreign film? This is probably one of the best movies I have ever seen. It's about a little boy who thinks God forgot to make him a girl so he accidentally was born a boy. This movie is just cute, funny, and serious at the same time. If you don't mind subtitles for an hour and a half, see this movie. 5. Scouts Honor. Scouts honor is a documentary about heterosexual Boy Scout Steven Cozza's struggle to lift the ban on gays serving openly in the Scouts. This documentary is awesome. This is one of the few film's I've seen where the main focus is a heterosexual fighting so hard to help those in the gay community achieve equality. This film is a true inspiration. 4. Beautiful Thing. Beautiful Thing follows the coming out and blossoming love of two boys in the United Kingdom. I'd say Beautiful Thing is a light drama with comical highlights. If I had to pick one movie made in the 90's to show how life is for gay teens I would choose this movie. Much like Ma Vie en Rose, this movie just cute. 3. Bound. Bound is one of the only lesbian action films I've ever seen. It stars Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly as two lesbians who want to still two million dollars from the mafia. It's a big screen production, and a good one at that. It's got sex, violence, and money, which is basically all you need to enjoy a movie. 2. But I'm A Cheerleader. Only this movie could make reparative therapy camps (the kind that "heal" gays) funny. The movie stars Clea DuVall, Natasha Lyonne, and RuPaul Charles (out of drag). God this movie is funny! I absolutely adore this movie. It has got to be one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. I don't know how they pulled it off. 1. If These Walls Could Talk 2. Also an HBO production, this movie follows the lives of three generations of lesbians in one house, and shows us the issues that might have affected them during their respected generations. Vanessa Redgrave won a Golden Globe for her performance in this movie. If These Walls Could Talk 2 is filled with a bright cast of actors and three wonderful stories. Anyone, gay or straight, would love this film. So there are my twelve. You have an opinion? Leave me a comment. |
