Found you here, and didn't know you were...! (Reply to this comment)

I came specifically to see if I could find anything on this museum for a trip I'm planning to make in late fall. A friend from Minnesota (she prefers to be called "a Chippewa") wants me to see it with her.

I found your review to be interesting, intense, and informative beyond the four walls of the attraction. As is all of your writing. Thank you so much, I look forward to reading more!

As an Anthropologist and as an American, I have a particular interest in Native Americans. This is one museum that I must visit when I return to the states, and will do so at the first opportunity I get.

Thank you for an excellent overview and review of this important new museum.

Cheers,

we missed this! I was there 2 years ago in DC and was sort of wishing this one were done. Sounds great.

write-up of a place I hadn't known about till now. The exteriors look interesting and different - very organic and sand-rock coloured. Thank you for this. Will keep it in mind next time I'm in DC.

Last spring when Tim and I met up in DC for the unofficial M&G, we took a walking tour the next day. We saw this museum under construction and wondered what it was going to be....it was already quite impressive. Now you have me wanting to return to visit it. Great job, Girl.

I too, am a charter member of this museum, and prefer to think of myself as Navajo first, Indian second. My fiance, whose Dad was Yakama, (thanks for the correct spelling), thinks less about these things but agreed this was a very good point.

Sorry I was unable to make the grand opening, but I've been patient, lo these many years watching for this museum to take wings. Though your cogent description, I now feel like I've been there.

Hawaii had its own royal family before it became a U.S. possession. It was an indepdent nation, with Queen Liliuokalani serving as its last monarch.

Very informative review. So who owned Hawaii before the US?

We've visited this museum shortly after it opened but I have to confess that we were not quite as enthralled by it as you were.
Perhaps they've added some exhibits but we thought it was rather sparse considering the space available. Traffic seemed to flow poorly which was probably my biggest complaint. Nevertheless, it's a wonderful place and grand structure, and a great tribute to American Indians as well as those across our borders.

Darla, old friends, have a son who works in the Washington area. They recently made a visit, and they toured the Museum of the American Indian for the first time.

I'm going to send them a copy of your review, for though they are sophisticated people, they conveyed some puzzlement over what the museum was trying to do.

Most Helpful, I should say.

I've been fascinated by Indians since I was a child (a result of all those cowboy movies with my Dad and a Cherokee great grandmother). Thanks for the virtual tour.

I just spent a day at the Eiteljorg in Indianapolis which was quite nice, but I'm sure this one is even cooler! I enjoyed reading this since I have a particular interest in the subject.

Well, we reinvent titles every few years. The PC rerm I see most often now is "First American". Probably the best since we are ALL immigrants - my Native American ancestors and my European. I guess my Indian ancestors got here first - although we really don't know what prehistorics may have sailed the Atlantic, do we? LOL. Oh well - in the words of Dickens - "God bless us, everyone". Thanks for a well written review.
