I recently purchased a 2004 Hyundai Sonata GLS, used with a little over 14,000 miles. I have to say that while I was at first extremely struck by the unique style of the car, the interior and the handling have impressed me even more.
For starters, I have noticed that while I would have preferred a manual transmission, the 4 cylinder automatic transmission is effortless and extremely smooth. The acceleration is more than adequate and if you are not looking for a muscle car, you will be more than happy with the pick up and feel while accelerating. The torque produced by the engine especially struck me and while the car may have 138 hp, it definitely makes the most of the power it has.
The interior is roomy and very comfortable. I am 6'4" tall and I can sit in the front seat and still have room for another person 6' tall to sit behind me. As it is, I have two small children and they have plenty of room to stretch out in their car seats. Three passengers could sit comfortably in the back seat and it would be no problem at all for three children.
The trunk is enormous and the feature of the fold-down seats was also a big bonus. Space for carrying luggage, groceries, or other items will not be a problem.
Finally, there are the issues of price and the warranty. For a little over $14,500, the Sonata is extremely affordable and provides a safe alternative to some of the higher-priced sedans such as the Accord and the Camry. While both of those are very good cars, I don't feel like I gave anything up, especially considering the Sonata's excellent safety ratings and general quality feel. The warranty is still intact and covers the car bumper-to-bumper for 5years/60,000 miles. Hyundai also provides original owners with a 10 year/100,000 mile power train warranty but that reverts to 5 years and 60,000 miles for second and subsequent owners.
I highly recommend the Sonata GLS. It is a safe, economical family sedan that still gives that "fun to drive" feeling. Thanks, Hyundai.
