Of all the household chores I probably like doing the laundry the most. Our laundry room is right off the kitchen so it isnt difficult to do a load a day, which is enough to keep the laundry under control. Unfortunately getting all that nice clean laundry put away isnt quite so easy. So I decided to invest in several Sterilite Square Laundry Baskets.
The Basics
This Sterilite plastic laundry basket is approximately 19 square and 14 high. There are large oval vents on all four sides and a solid bottom. There are two large reinforced handles for carrying. All of mine are white but a blue-green was also available.
My Experience
I like to try and do my chores when my children are sleeping. Of course it is hard to put laundry away when the children are snoozing in the same room. So my clean laundry tends to pile up. In the past I have had large laundry baskets that I could pile up with a couple of loads of laundry. I would try and stack the laundry so that the child I figured would wake first would have their laundry on the top. Of course that never worked. Someone always ended up needing what was on the bottom of the basket first so that meant my neatly folded laundry was soon a huge mess. There had to be a better way!
I headed to the store with the plan of getting each of the kids their own big laundry basket. But when I saw the Sterilite square laundry baskets they seemed a better fit for their small clothes, so I picked up three. Suddenly laundry became much easier! My childrens clothes get done together in one load, so as they came out of the drier I just tossed the clothes into the correct basket. Now when someone wakes from a nap I can take their basket in with me and put their clothes away quickly. Since The Little Guy joined us I dont always have the time to fold the kids clothes to put them away. But now I dont need to dig through a huge basket of everyones clothes to find someones favorite shirt. I can just hand the girls their baskets and let them find what ever it is that they have to wear.
I like the system so much after a week I went back and got baskets for my husband and I as well. I was concerned at first that I might have trouble fitting our clothes into these smaller basket but I havent had any trouble. Even pants fit easily since I fold them in thirds to better fit in our drawers when they make it that far. My husband no longer complains that he cant find his clothes because now I can just point him in the direction of his basket.
I now only use one of my large laundry baskets. I could not fit an entire load of towels into one of these small baskets so I continue to use my hip hugger basket for those. My other large basket has found a new life for all of the outdoor toys we have. It makes washing them down with the garden hose a cinch.
Final Thoughts
After a month or so these basket seem durable, even with my little girls helping me. I really do like that the baskets are a little smaller than a regular laundry basket. There are much lighter for carrying up and down the stairs since they dont hold quite as much as my rectangular laundry baskets. But most importantly our clothes are organized even when I cant find the time to put the laundry away.
