Trolls? (Reply to this comment)
by tiger62x
I didn't realize that was such a huge problem here, actually I didn't realize there was cash involved. However I find myself totally addicted to writing about stuff, that I would talk about if any of my friends cared. I just have way different tastes than most of the people I know, so I'm like a fiend now, up all night writing.
So I hope that doesn't kick off anyone's red flag.
Thanks for the head's up, and the nice Epinions welcome.

Good, straightforward piece. (Reply to this comment)
by Horswispr
I don't know if you read my older piece on the same subject, but you caught many of the same signs. Often, plagiarists will have radical fluctuations in writing style WITHIN a piece. They will write their own brief intro, and then steal the rest of their piece from somewhere else. This is still plagiarism, of course. I started using "the Google method" when I noticed a lot of plagiarism going on at a horrible site called BrightIdea.com (still exists, though nobody goes there). As you say, just NH the thing, notify the site, and move on. I haven't noticed as much plagiarism going on here at Epinions, but apparently it exists. Glad you posted about it.

I disagree with #1 I do feel the rest of the article is on point, esp about leaving it alone, conversly I have had people follow me around and leave stupid comments, but reacting only validates their idiocy and encourages them.

Kinda strange that I didn't see this article before. Anyhows, though it's a little dated, the info here is still applicable here for the life of the Epinionator. You truly deserved to be on my list of EOTW! Later dude.

20 of these losers during my first 6 months here on epinions. It's funny how they just keep coming, kinda like those bugs in Starship Troopers. You get rid of one of them, then you'll find 10 more coming your way.

Greets and Peace! (Reply to this comment)
by timdunn
Thanks for reading my Gattaca essay. Thought I'd reciprocate, and found myself grinning like mad - the recent essay was going three for three on the telltale list.
1) "Multiple well written postings in a short time period." I obsess easily, so I try to write an Epinion every other day. Sometimes I end up writing daily. I'm only guessing they are not "well written" to have not been flagged by this. (j/k!)
2) "Extreme variations in writing styles." I'm still trying to find "my voice." For the first few weeks, I was trying to be objective and unemotional. Then I switched over to trying to be conversational. For this review, I wanted a more thoughtful tone, and experimented with a more erudite stance.
3) "Completely off-topic." Yes, it was, at least on the surface. You saw the parallels, though it would have taken the review into a different territory than my intention. My attraction to the movie Gattaca is almostly at the emotional level, because I see my daughter in Vincent's quandry. To examine the struggles would have diverged the correlation too much for me to capture my passion of the film.
Now do you see why I was nearly laughing aloud?
Thanks for taking the time to look it over!
[Note to readers other than madtheory: In order to avoid any appearance of attempting to beg for views, I am being deliberately ambigous regarding the specifics of my essay.]

Thanks for the praise. If we all throw a fist now and again maybe we can stave off the death of Epinions until the next time "Infinite Venture Capital" comes around...

I've seen a lot of others like these, but your step by step example is one of the best I've seen.
I have tried many of your methods, but the Find.com (ack! I forgot the name already) I did not know about. I've tried google before, but it always seems to come back "serch to specific" ...
thanks!

This Comment is a little late, but I was tired yesterday and didn't even pick up the reference ot my name....
Don't worry about crashing under the weight of my awesome, I save that fate for people that feel the sudden urge to flame me like, oh I dunno, b-40 and the exceptional ineptitude of frodo008.
Thanks for the mention, though you should have referenced McTurbot too, who's quotes I frequently utilize to slam people (like say, if I'm ever outsmarted, which never happens, I'll respond with an earth-shattering tycoon KABLAM! like 'Dear Awesome, You Suck') I might bring back the illusive Wall of Shite to scare off the thieves from continuing their aimless parade.

Some people... (Reply to this comment)

Don't like to tip their hat to the plagiarist, due to the slow response time of Epinions. If they tag the opinion with a "Ha! I caught you copying!", the smarter plagiarists will delete the opinion, and then there's no proof.

The one thing that irritates me no end is finding a NH on a review and nothing in the comments section to give me a clue.
Even if the rater only put no-no in the comments I would have an inkling. When they rate it NH and it is obviously a well written opinion, I look before I rate trying to see if it has been plagiarized. I rarely find anything so I end up looking like a fool for my VH when it is discovered that this is a thief I have rated.
Oh well, Thanks for the good tips.

I agree with most of this, except (Reply to this comment)
by magenta321
I disagree with this one part. "NH the review and leave a comment with a link to the plagiarized piece." In theory, I agree with you. However, it also lets the plaigerizer know that you are on to them, and gives them time to delete the piece. This same piece will show up again shortly, and you probably will miss it.
I prefer to NH it, and report it to Epinions. Then they don't know that I am on to them. The NH gives serious Epinionators cause to pause, so they are likely to do a search for the review themselves.
If the review is still there when Epinions gets to them, it will likely be deleted, and their account may even get suspended. If the review is gone (because they were tipped off) then Epinions is powerless.
Despite my one bone of contention, excellent review.

Mad,
Another tell tale sign is if they put nothing or just a few words in the pro, con, and overall recommendation section and then their epinion body is like pages and pages long! I'm sorry, but if you're that verbose in the opinion, it's hard for me to buy that you lack words in the intro sections.
