The Bottom Line Put pencil to paper, let the organic energy flow, create the words that when put to music will make the world sing. New Technology will not kill this classic.

I had an epiphany this weekend and I've left technology behind. Yes an amazing but true fact. These days when I write songs I use the computer, I've used the piano with a pad of paper and I've sat in noisy and quiet places taking inspiration where I could find it and then committing it to paper. Partly out of fear and partly for the sake of convenience I've committed all of my recent writings to the computer first draft to final product. I sit at the computer and write for hours letting the ideas flow and I've gotten some amazing songs, but in those moments of writer's block, I would sit for hours staring at the screen and nothing would come out. I would hope for a power failure and then in my mind, I wouldn't have to write, I could take a break. Well this past weekend I left technology behind and I've reverted to good old paper and pencil and I find that the simple act of putting pencil to paper has the effect of freeing me from the need to be perfect, like a computer never could. I wrote three songs and fleshed out the ideas for two additional songs all in the space of two hours. When I finally sit at the computer I will be able to polish the words, they seem to flow better now and I think the simple act of putting pencil to paper helped me to organize my thoughts better, to express myself in a more organic way. I will still use the computer because hey after all that inspiration and work, I'd hate to lose it. I think that if I were to lose what I've written, it was meant to happen and obviously it all needs to be re-written. Besides it could always come out better the next time. I make it a habit with my latest project to write three different versions of the same song, sometimes I will write two, sometimes I keep adding words to the same song, then I take what is best to make that song work. Technology will always be a part of my routine as a Songwriter, I've got the music workstation, I've got the desktop computer and a laptop computer, but I will never again neglect paper and pencil. I've come full circle and I've reaped the benefit, now I'm passing it along. |
