Great Underwear

Written: Jun 22 '05 (Updated Jun 22 '05)
Pros:Comfortable, do not stink on extended treks, dry easily, incredibly durable.
Cons:Little pricey. But how many pairs of Fruit-of-the-Loom do you go through in 5 years?
The Bottom Line: Great underwear, great value.

Well, I am surprised that I would be writing a review for something so mundane such as underwear but if you really think about it, underwear is something that touches you (for most people) everyday.

To get the technical portion over:

1) The boxers are made of 3.5 oz Capilene "microdenier" polyester that have a moisture-wicking capacity.

2) Gusset crotch for ease of movement.

3) Elastic waistband

4) They weight 85gm (3 oz) for you weight-conscious backpackers and travelers.

5) They have all sorts of colorful prints.

6) They cost anywhere from $23 to $29 depending on where you shop.

I purchased my first pair in 2000 as I was planning to take a trip trekking in the Middle East. Given the trip was in early June, I wanted underwear that would keep me cool, not stink easily if I didn't change everyday, and could dry quickly after hand-washing. Prior to this, I was a briefs kind of guy. I bought 2-3 pairs of the silkweight boxers for the trip and I was hooked.

The fabric is pretty soft and nice to the touch. Sort of like silk, but not quite. The older pairs seem to feel a little softer while a new batch I recently bought seem to feel a little bit more plastic-like. Maybe I just need to give them time to break them in, like a pair of jeans.

They really don't stink much. I was on a 9 day hiking trip in Africa and because of the cold (yes, cold) because of the elevation, did not change much. The underwear never picked up much of a stink. Similarly, a hiking trip in South America also didn't cause the underwear to stink even though parts of the trip was in the rainforest.

You can wash these in the sink, and unlike cotton underwear, they will dry overnight if you air dry them.

I still have the pairs that I bought in 2000. I have worn them on a regular basis. And they are the only underwear that I will take when I travel. At $20+ a pair, they may seem expensive, but after close to 5 years, the oldest pair seem almost-brand new. The elastic waistband has not degraded. There are no frayed edges or tears. This is after probably hundreds of washer/dryer cycles. And they are still incredibly comfortable. I give these boxers an unreserved thumbs up.
