The Bottom Line The Best War movies are the ones that make the viewer realize that everyone loses in wars. I lost friends, and I lost kin.
1- Sargeant York Gary Cooper plays in this film telling of the true hero from Pall Mall, Tennessee. York, a simple, honest hillbilly whose religious convictions lead him to oppose taking up arms against another man is given leave to consider his role in World War I. The Army recognized that York was an asset to the corp for his abilities with a rifle. After he is given furlough to contemplate the direction that God would have him take. He decides that while war was wrong, he would do more by bringing it to an early end. He became the most highly decorated hero of WWI. He returns home to a nation that shows him a hero's welcome. York demands that he didn't nothing heroic, was not proud of killing others, but rather did a job that needed to be done and as he saw it shortened the war. See this one! It will make you laugh throughout the film. 2- The Deer Hunter Another Nam War movie. If the States didn't welcome the Vets back, Hollywood certainly did. The famous Russian Roulette scene was what made this movie become indelible in the viewers minds. 3- Das Boot ( the German version captioned for English viewers. ) Seen is the claustrophobic lifestyle of sailors on a German submarine, the war machines which ruled the waters during the first years of the war. Although the sailors of the German Navy was held as heros in the eyes of the public of the country for which they fought, their standard of life was filled with danger and uncertainty. In the latter years of the War, submarines were not as safe in the waters as they had first been. There was never a guarantee that they would ever return to their homeland ever again. 4- Good Morning Viet Nam Robin Williams plays a radio announcer that captures more soldiers on the air than the U.S. forces do in the jungles. This movie is based on a real soldier that was stationed in Nam. He was one of, if not the biggest celebrity in Nam with the exception of Charlie. 5- The Guns of Navarone This World War II movie is based on the Americans battle to silence two of the enemy's largest cannons. It was essential to rid these big guns as their firepower was inflicting damage to the allied vessels and had a range that was unequaled by the passing warships. 6- Full Metal Jacket Takes you through the paces of boot camp as you see a young man broken, but not rebuilt. Other boots become Marines and win all expense trip to a foreign land, Viet Nam. More Nam lifestyle put to film. As a Vet, I feel that this one captures the military experience from the hazing of the D.I. to the jungle fighting in Nam. 7- Bridge on the River Kwai Oscar winner starring William Holden as prisoners of war construct a bridge for the Japanese. Although this movie was not historically accurate, it was very entertaining. 8- Apocalypse Now Brando and Sheen star in this Viet Nam War movie depicting some of the ego trips that motivated this War that no one wanted to participate in. For being such an unpopular war, Hollywood certainly made some good movies depicting the life in Nam. 9- The Patriot Mel Gibson's acting was superb in this movie based on an early colonialist that is reluctantly trust into the American Revolution when his plantation is overtaken by the English. They arrest one of his sons and slay another before his eyes. This movie was well produced, adding the cinema complements that computer assisted film making affords made this movie come to life. Good quality film from an accomplished multi talented actor/director. 10- The Great Escape This movie was so good that it spawned a television show depicting a World War II prisoner of war camp. Hogan's Heros was not nearly as realistic, but the movie wasn't as realistic as p.o.w. lifestyle either. The great escape was filled with an all star cast. This movie and Ryan's Express with Frank Sanatra starring were toss-ups for placement in my listing, however as that The Great Escape had so many more big stars in it I felt that it was better suited to be listed..
