| boytechie's Full Review: LG VX6100 Cellular Phone |
The LG VX6100 was not my first choice when given a spread of phones at the local Verizon Wireless mall kiosk. I was so taken back by the more expensive phones with supposedly lots of features I could use. Not even past 20 words with the sales person there, I was presented with a pretty good deal at the time for this LG VX6100 phone. Two for the price of one and a nice family package plan to come with just couldn't be passed.
The Phone.
The first features I noticed where the silver coated plastic body that looks sleek and has a nice display on the outside, handy for knowing who called without actually opening the flip phone. The camera feature in the phone is hidden under a button like sliding protector on the front facia which is somewhat functional but could be left off without a loss. Side buttons for the camera, volume control, and driving mode come in handy quite often and are placed with some thought. The phone in hand feels sturdy and is a bit bigger than the latest smaller phones but can be easily held and is somewhat comforting to have something with weight in your hand. However, it can be a little cumbersome in the pocket as it is a little bigger for a flip phone. I personally dropped the phone off the elevated train but recovered the phone on the street level with only a few dings. This would prove the phone pretty durable since the platform is nearly 20 feet high.
Once opened, the flip phone is appealing and shows brightly lit finger pad with an electric blue hue while a highly reflective screen stares you squarely with a bright color screen. Buttons are easy to read and easy to press with confidence. All of the inside-flip components are easy to read and easy to use and can be what is expected of a great phone.
.:Features worth mentioning:.
The phone has a great camera feature that shoots with a flash when needed at 640x480 at 1x or 2x zoom and 320x240 at 1x, 2x and 4x. I believe there is even a smaller resolution but is probably not worthwhile unless you are really into small grainy shots in large quantities. The flash is somewhat effective with the ability to shoot in the dark with some success. The resolution is good enough for fun shots but nothing you would keep or use seriously. Even can do self portraits with the flip closed! The screen resolution is decent and can view the pictures with some clarity. With closer inspection, the picture should be sent via email to yourself and downloaded to view better.
Another feature is the speakerphone. This feature is probably the most useful as sometimes waiting on the phone for customer service or conference calls, holding the phone is not necessary as the speakerphone is quite effective and doesn't need to be held directly near the mouth to be heard on the other side of the line.
Driving mode is something I didn't discover right away, but found extremely helpful. When on, the driving mode will recite the caller ID, identified via contact name or number over the speakerphone. This saves you from having to look at your phone while taking your eyes off the road to identify who is calling you.
.:Standard Features:.
Talk time on the phone is pretty good on a full charge. I spent 2-3 hours on the phone using the speakerphone and still could go the rest of the day without having to charge up.
The phonebook is pretty easy to use and can hold plenty of numbers categorically with home, mobile, email, address, and photo caller id.
The alarm clock is also surprisingly smart having the ability to program 3 different alarm schedules. This is helpful when you have differing schedules on the weekdays than weekends.
Ringtones can be heard in polyphonic splendor. The preloaded rings are the standard lot with basic to somewhat fancy classical tunes.
Call logs and timers are basic and informative when you need to do a quick minute audit.
Another plus of this phone is the reported SAR for the phone, measuring in at .96 at the ear and .60 on the body. Of course this measure is often overlooked with highly featured phones. This one has a nice balance.
.:Features I wish it had:.
Bluetooth compatibility for data transfer and hands free phone use with nicer ear pieces and cars. I know this could be quite useful in large cities and states where using a cell phone while driving is illegal.
Software to interface with a computer. Although it is a nicety that would compete with higher priced phones and WinCE phones, it would be great to have basic calendar functions transferable from PC to phone.
Color ID screen on the outside would be nice to display photo caller ID.
The phone comes with a travel charger, manual, and belt clip.
