Being a car journalist in Europe, I've got the opportunity to drive different new cars. Not so long ago I was offered to test 2005 Subaru Impreza WRX sport sedan. So the story begins...
I'd like to say that it is far from just ordinary transportation, it's Impreza, and Impreza WRX, all-wheel-drive and fun-to-drive. It features a turbocharged 2.0 R4 engine (227 h.p., 0-60 - over 6 seconds) and a sport suspension. Moreover it's also available as a wagon, which means you can get more room and more utility.
The car itself is a very appealing one after being redesigned in 2002. The WRX I've tested featured limited-slip rear differential, bigger brakes and unique wheels. In the cockpit are alloy pedals, a six-disc CD changer, automatic climate control and a Momo leather-wrapped steering wheel.
The car really sleeps on low RPM because of the turbo lag, but over 3,000 rpm, it's like a bullet. Handling is superb thanks to a well-tuned suspension, grippy tires and the standard all-wheel drive.
It is an astonishing machine with super car perfromance that delivers smiles every time you press the loud pedal.
Around town it drives superbly, but as soon as you put your foot down your internal organs end up on the back seat and the road gets swallowed up.
For a factory standard car the sound it makes is awesome. A deep burble from the 3" prodrive backbox compliments the turbo whislte, especially after 3000rmp.
