How NOT to Get Ripped Off

The Bottom Line Trust no one, especially mattress salesmen. They will rip you off. Do your research before venturing into their territory. Tell them to shut the hell up.

ALL mattress salesmen are going to rip you off if you don't come prepared or is a sap like me. What's worse, they're gonna laugh at your stupidity after you leave with an overpriced mattress.

There is really nothing you can do to stop getting ripped off, but you can lessen the degree a little bit. Here are some tips:

1. Do some online research on mattresses before you go to a store. Check out epinions.com and consumersearch.com. Focus on two brands to try out and record the specs (including coil count, etc).

2. Do not buy a no name brand mattress (sometimes a salesman will steer you there). They are overpriced (meaning more commissions) and they will sag quickly.

3. Let the salesman know that you know your stuff. Half of what they say are lies. Don't try to be nice to them, because then they got you. Bring ear plugs if necessary.

4. When bargaining, start very low. Contrary to popular opinions, they will not be angry and turn you away. Start at at least half the sale price, even if it's on sale.

5. Do not believe the one day only crap they tell you. Think about it, how many mattress does a person need? One salesman even told me I have to buy now because the store is closing in five minutes. They don't think I read the store hours posted at the door?

6. Make sure you tell them no substitutions. Otherwise, they might send you a comparable model which is cheaper.

7. When finally making the buy, check the receipt and see that it includes everything you are promised. Trust me, they are that bad!

Good luck!
