| zim123's Full Review: ML 6060 Printer |
You will notice that this is my very first posting of an 'Opinion'. That does not mean that I don't have lots of opinions. It does mean that I have been so impressed with this little Laser Printer that I feel compelled to vent my pleasure.
While printing my tax forms for the n' time on my old HP LaserJet it committed suicide with smoke and all. I have several other printers; however, the thought of printing a deadline job of over 1000 pages on an inkjet printer sent chills up my spine. I looked at all the replacement HP's, but being seriously funds limited (after tax time), I started to poll my friends. To my surprise, some of my Australian friends kept pointing me toward the Samsung products. Samsung is not a known Laser Printer supplier in the US, but has a well-established worldwide presence.
To the printer. $320 USD from ProVantage for a 1200dpi/12 ppm printer. At this price it comes with a 3000 page toner cartridge. A 6000 page replacement is around $85. Set up is a snap with a large fold out and a 200 page User's Guide. The Australian manual is somewhat less verbose than the US version, but you can review it at:
http://samsungelectronics.com/printer/support/downloads/dn_5122_en.html
The User's Guide includes instructions for use on a network, either as a shared printer or as a network printer with an optional network card. The shared printer instructions cover both the host computer and the clients. This worked the first time. A clear LINUX installation section is included in the US User's Guide and the CDROM includes the LINUX drivers. The printer and drivers worked flawlessly with WIN2000, WIN98, WIN-ME. LINUX is next. Both USB and parallel interfaces are provided.
Although this printer is ready for POSTSCRIPT, it requires a optional PS SIMM and I have not been able to determine if that makes it a true Postscript printer or if it is a Postscript to PCL6 translator.
A 500-sheet primary paper tray is completely enclosed and there is a dropdown tray for special jobs. A second 500 sheet tray is available. The dropdown feed tray and the dropdown paper outlet provide an (almost) straight through paper path. This is really great for envelopes; however, you can only load 10 at a time. The envelope printing is superb and FAST!
This little gem has several special features for those of us that are printing impaired. The addition of a CANCEL button on the printer allows the instant stopping of the print job when you meant to hit the "print current page" and hit " all " instead. Of course you've never done that! And it comes with all those neat features like posters, booklets, watermarks, and multiple pages to the sheet built into the print driver. You don't have to search through the layers of Word ever again.
Speaking of just plain smart, the ML-6060 comes with 4Meg of memory and is expandable to 68 Megs using standard 72 pin, EDO, non-parity, 60ns memory modules. Installation instructions are clear and a snap. I installed a 8 meg SIMM in less than 5 minutes. If you need more memory, you can find great memory prices at Pricewatch.com.
Finally, why I am impressed. Regardless of the cost, this little printer ran pretty constantly for 2 (14 hour) days and almost met the advertised 12ppm with only 12 megs of memory. It never got hot. It never sounded funny. It never dimmed the lights (like the HP did) and It printed some really complex graphic content without a flaw. I just had to remember to pick up the output at about 200 pages and load the paper tray after each 500 sheets.
