The Bottom Line I've been listening to and studying hip hop music and culture for my entire life - these are the albums I love.
Illmatic by Nas - Nas' debut album is my favorite album of all time. The album is very concise, with only 10 tracks. However, the shortness of the LP leads to a better total package as there is no filler of any sort, and what one is left with is an album that is perfect from start to finish. The rhymes are emotional, as if they have been trying to escape Nas' mouth for his entire life. Every word is perfectly placed, and the beats are dope. De La Soul is Dead by De La Soul - After their flower-clad debut, "3 Feet High and Rising" De La Soul put out this darker, more complex follow up. Don't let the change of pace fool you - this album is a classic. Buhloone Mindstate by De La Soul - The third LP from De La is also great. THe change in sound from their second album to this one is just as great as the change from their first to second, but they take it all in stride. Great great album. Midnight Marauders by A Tribe Called Quest - This is Tribe's most complete album from start to finish they maintain a motif very well. Just a great album. Funcrusher Plus by Company Flow - This was one of the albums that started the underground revolution in New York hip-hop in 1995-1997. It's very dark, but it's all completely original - you'll never hear anything like this anywhere else. Low End Theory by A Tribe Called Quest - Every song on this LP is good, there's really nothing bad you can say about this album. Resurrection by Common Sense - Common didn't really gain popularity until a few years after this album was released, so a lot of head sleep on this LP. Don't, it's his best work. Criminal Minded - This album from Krs-One the late/great Scott La Rock is most definitely a classic. Good from start to finish, it's hardcore and intelligent. Nia by Blackalicious - The Quannum family seems to only release very high quality music to the world. This, the first LP from Blackalicous is great. Black on Both Sides by Mos Def - Mos Def is my favorite emcee, I've followed his career since his days as an underground cat in New York. This album is very personal. It's great. |
