The Bottom Line This is basically my opinion on the 'must sees' - really just movies I've enjoyed a lot.
Top ten movies? Wow! You probably won't agree with me, but anyhow (in no particular order)... The Matrix - Intriguing plot-line, excellent visual effects, great soundtrack. The characters were excellent too - Reeves' character showed good development, and then there's Trinity. She's completely female and yet completely an action hero! Cool. The Labyrinth - Always loved this film. The main character, Sarah, is very appealing; I identified well with her. She's the perfect cross between idealised heroine and normal teenage girl with normal failings. And the actual setting, with all its characters, sparks the imagination. I like it as much now as when I first saw it. The Princess Bride - It's a kooky story. Plenty of laughs, and Westley and Buttercup and both wonderful. Not to mention Humperdinck being someone you love to hate. And the way the kid keeps breaking in with 'Is this kissing again?' Monty Python and the Holy Grail - Laughs aplenty. What's more, it gets better the more you watch it, because you get into the humor. A masterpiece of the bizarre. Robin Hood: Men in Tights - A bit naughty in places, but makes me laugh so much. A wonderful mickey-take of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves which was a good movie anyway; this movie is twice as good! It's the kind of film you have to watch about five times in order to pick up all the jokes. The Full Monty - A completely unpretentious and amusing film about everyday people in Northern England. More laughs (do you get the feeling I like comedy?) and a set of wholly realistic and appealing characters. I just have to like this movie. Beauty and the Beast - I'm so soppy! For a Disney film, this was done so sensitively; the careful development of the love between the title characters from complete mutual dislike through to the love that saved them both. The enchanted objects are all very good too. Life of Brian - I'm Brian and so's my wife!. Another great Python film - not very sympathetic toward the followers of Messiahs, but nice enough toward Jesus, so it's not as heretical as all that. And funny, funny, funny - We can fight for his right to have babies! Graham Chapman made a great lead character, and all the other Pythons did tremendously well as several other characters each. I'll have to give this film its own review - too much to say! The Breakfast Club - I haven't actually seen all of this movie, but it deserves a mention as the bit I did see, about the latter two thirds, was great. Even thought I hadn't seen the beginning, I felt 'in there' with the characters; it was very easy to identify with all of them. It's a wonderful life - Yes! A corny black and white movie! This is a feel-good type film, and I like it a lot. One thing that's good about it is that the main character, George Bailey, is no saint; but he's done plenty of good things with his life, and that's what makes him so appealing. Lovely film. Honorable mentions - Last Action Hero, Curly Sue, Toy Story 2, Mrs. Doubtfire. |
