Beat Cancer

Written: Apr 20 '01
The Bottom Line: Excellent cancer preventative. Must be added to diet through supplementation due inadequate soil levels. Dosage of 200mcg daily recommended.

Studies have been conducted in South Dakota where the soil is richest in selenium and in Ohio where it is deficient in selenium. The end result was that residents of Ohio had a significantly greater incidence of cancer (200% greater) than residents of S. Dakota. Doctors have found that cancer patients seem to have deficient levels of selenium in their blood. It has been found to be of particular benefit to preventing breast cancer. One study showed a reduced incidence of breast cancer from 82% to 10% with selenium supplementation.

Unless most of the foods you consume are grown on soil rich in selenium and you can be guaranteed that those foods have not been stripped of their nutrients by processing, you need to supplement. Selenium can be toxic at high doses, however so the safe intake has been set at 200mcg daily for those individuals wanting to prevent cancers. You may want to slightly increase if you are dealing with an already existing illness.
