The Dank Dungeon of Castle Loches in the Loire Valley
by RobinLynn | Jul 23 '01
The rather forbidding-looking Loches, with its dungeon and torture chamber, is a different type of castle to visit while in the Loire Valley.

When we lived in France I was a youngster.... (Reply to this comment)

...and being a youngster of the male persuasion I was far more interested in the dank, dungeon, military type of castle than the frilly, decorative, artistic type. Chinon, for example, was a lot more interesting to me than, say, Azay-Le-Rideau or Chenonceaux, as lovely as the latter two are.

Loches was right up there with Chinon (and with Carcassonne in the deep south) and you nailed it perfectly. This was the dark side of the period, and a fascinating one at that.

Excellent pick and post, Robin, as usual.

...I would have never made it! Those were barbarous times and it's hard for us 'softies' today to come to grips with it. A most interesting review. Thanks!

Thrilling Enough For Even A Horror Buff (Reply to this comment)

Sounds like the plot for a horror movie! Interesting historical pointers and facts, too. But, personally, I stay above ground--in clear view of lots of sunshine--if I visit. No torture chambers or dungeons for this chic, thankyouverymuch! I only like that stuff in books or on the screen, not up close and personal :)

Another "stimulating" and fantastic review, Robin. Makes me shiver to think of it. Just think how often art imitates real life.

I've never visited a dungeon, but your review help me imagine the experience. What a different scene to the gardens of Monet!

Here I thought I had ran out of new places in Paris and you found me a great one! I am taking my daughter to Europe next year and we will hit this castle. Thanks!
