Painting Pots: Fun, Creative...and crafty!

The Bottom Line Painting pots is cheap and easy to do! For all ages.

Move over Martha Stewart. I've recently stumbled upon a craft project which is a great project for the young or old. It's simple, easy, fairly inexpensive and there are so many creative ways to expand this idea!

My sister visited recently and got me into a painting frenzy. We painted some furniture but I hated the waiting and long hours before the results. One day my friend sent me little planting pots that were painted. Clearly she had bought them, but when I opened the package, I thought to myself, "I can do this!".

I visited the local WalMart since they have a good selection of crafts. I bought some more small bottles of acrylic paint. It's made by Apple Barrel and is a steal at $0.44 a bottle. It's an acrylic paint great for all sorts of painting surfaces and it dries very quickly. I also bought small planting pots (the clay ones) for again the low price of $0.45 a pot. I was shocked at these low prices and stocked up.

I started painting the pots and was glad to see the paint although streaky when applying, dried in a solid color. I experimented with color, designs and different brushes. I found it looks great to have one color on the lower part of the pot and then a nice contrasting color on the top part. Bold colors look great. Another great thing about this project is that you can easily paint over a mistake and try again.

Upon more visits to WalMart, I bought stencils and with practice, was able to apply stencils to the pots as well as my own free form designs.

I've made close to twenty pots, all gifts and have started painting picture frames as well. The pots are great for seeds, plants or for a holding container. I've given them to people as themselves or I've bought plants and given them with both the pot and plant.

This is such a great gift idea. Young kids can paint their own pots for themselves or for someone else. It isn't a particularly messy project, just put down a paint cloth or some newspapers.

You'll need:
Paint (I recommend acrylic paint for all surfaces)
Pots (You can find these at a gardening store, hardware store or discount store like Walmart)
Stencils (These are great for doing professional looking designs...try a craft store or WalMart)
Brushes
Water
Imagination (The most important thing of all!)

Of course, practice makes perfect and experimentation is certainly fun! I've found which brushes I like and what color combinations I like. There's no set way to do this...let your creative mind run free!
