I was thinking the exact same thing as soon I saw the title! While I don't think that ET single handedly destroyed the 2600, it definitely did not help.

...one game quickly came to mind.

E.T. for the old Atari 2600.

I'm glad to see that you included it, however I would suggest that it be listed as #1 on your list.

Few may know but this game almost single-handedly destroyed Atari.

Certainly, things were never the same after this atrocity was released - especially after all of the hype the game and movie generated.

An absolute shame that the once mighty Atari might be done in my a sludge-looking alien.

A shame indeed.

Great article nonetheless.

"I didn't have a Game Boy. I was spared a lot of agony, as it would seem from the crop of stop 32 footsteps gets from THQ. "

Which actually begs the question - given how much junk they send, why didn't I put any of those awful THQ games on my own list?

It actually relates to why most of the games I put on my list are older. Nowadays, game companies like THQ create a generic action game engine, which is playtested for smoothness first. Then they get the license, and plug in images as they see fit.

The end result is a game that plays just like every other mediocre generic action game. And while there was a serious temptation to put "Every THQ game made" on my list, just as Alkaiser singled out Bandai, I thought the games I fingered made very single THQ game I've received to be relative manna from heaven.

Great review, but I'm surprised you mentioned Austin Powers: Operation Trivia but forgot to add the horrid Austin Powers Game Boy games that were infinitely worse to that one.

The worst thing is that this terrible trend of basing games on movies without any thoughts about quality seems to be destined to continue. Just look at Jurassic Park III on the GBA...

Sincerely,

David

I have to give an HR to any review that mentions Manos in it. Though, if they made a video game out of it, I'd get it if I could be Torgo... =) Though, that would probably mean the entire game soundtrack would be nothing but the Haunting Torgo Theme. That would be too scary...

All the damn Superman things have run together at this point. They're all the same. They've got Superman, Lois Lane, and Lex Luthor.

It's fair game.

I've got to call you out on this one. I know you hate the Superman N64 that much, but it was based on the cartoon show, if anything. Wait until we have a write-off based on bad TV based games to bring that up.

But all the same, great review.

On the other hand, however... (Reply to this comment)

...you have The World is not Enough, X-Wing, both for PC and the Rambo series for Sinclair ZX Spectrum and many more that range from decent to excellent. I think that there are many more successful movie - game conversions than the other way around.

Overall, I have to agree with every single of your picks, just thought mentioning the other side of the story. Great review...
