I actually did read Eve Bunting’s Market Day as a bed time story. The store where I work hosts Bed Time Stories every Wednesday evening and has for the past 6 years. I ran the event for several months and am still the "oh God, the storyteller can’t make it" replacement. That is how I ended up reading Market Day. The Events Coordinator ran into the back room 15 minutes before the event to ask me to fill in because the story teller hadn’t shown up and handed me this book.
Good thing Eve Bunting doesn’t do tongue twisters.
Market Day tells the story of 2 children experiencing an Irish, first-Thursday-of-the-month farm market. The little girl has a penny to spend (mind you, this is set when a penny bought something by itself.) There are animals and crafts and "Wellies." All and all it is a very gentle pleasant story, reminiscent of something your grandparents may have done.
The artwork is very pretty as well. Everything is clearly and correctly rendered, conveying a slightly misty memory of a time gone by. I can find no fault with it and if you have seen any of my other picture book reviews you know how rare that is.
All in all, if you are looking for something kind and gentle to put the little ones to bed with, you can’t go far wrong with Eve Bunting and you are right on the nose with Market Day. Plus, you won’t sprain your tongue.
This review was done as part of the National Bedtime Story Write Off hosted by Phineaskc and Angelabar. Every story you read to your child cultivates not only their relationship with you, but teaches them to be better readers, and instills in them an appreciation of reading that will make them better students and more clever, well adjusted adults. It could be the most valuable think you do for your child this side of providing food and shelter.
