Web Of Trust....... Who Needs It?

The Bottom Line Find people who share the same interests and forget the Very Helpful ratings.

When I first started with Epinions, I thought it would be neat to review products and have people commend me on them. I like to know about a product before I purchase it, especially when I know almost nothing about it.

During the several months I have been here, I have noticed that the WOT is worshiped by some. I tried not to ask too many questions and just kind of got a feel for this place. I reviewed others comments on Epinions and some I really have to agree with. To really use this site effectively, you really need to spend the time to find people with the same interests.

It's a shame that someone who is rated either SH or NH goes to the bottom of the barrel. Who is to say their opinion is not "worthy" to be seen... once 500 more opinions are written and theirs drops to the last page. Funny... quite a few of these "losers" can have extremely helpful opinions on products. I myself am a sucker for a good movie review.

I have decided to not rate every single product I come in contact with. I would rather rate a product that has been a surprise problem or the best thing I ever bought.

I have also put several people on my block list because I have seen how they treat other peoples opinions or I totally disagree with their opinions. Give a NH or SH for reasons unknown.... too short, too long review? I don't base a persons "worthy opinion" on how long or how short, well, that's a lie. I actually have a tendency not to rate a very long review... simply because I get sick of reading it! I say that as I am writing my 100th paragraph. For someone to get a NH review because their opinion is full of information, but only 10 sentences long is ridiculous. I have read where others rate poorly if the person didn't take the "time" to "perfect" their review. That's insane. Obviously they took some time or the review wouldn't exist. Who is to say who is "perfect" by whoever's standards. If the opinion doesn't explain about the product, I simply ignore it and if the person has a few like that, I put them on the block list. Who am I to say they were NH? Their information could very well affected a persons buying decision based on that one review.

Here comes the hate mail pouring in.

I put several people on my WOT (less than 10, I think) simply because I liked their taste in movies. I may read some of their reviews on other products and think they are nuts for liking or disliking it. I still refuse to condemn them for it. If I don't like it, again, I move on. If I like it, it's definitely going to get a VH review. I want them to know I appreciated the information.

To really know if a product is something you want or don't want, I suggest instead of going for a VH review, you need to read several opinions by that person. If they have your same interests... BAM, put 'em on your WOT. Quite frankly, alot of the VH reviews that are smacked onto the screen after a search are usually not helpful to me. Not because their review stinks, I just have a different opinion. This doesn't mean I am going to downgrade them to NH. As I repeat myself.... ignore their review and move on.

Of course, this is just MY VH opinion!
