Modern Love

The Bottom Line: Outstanding product that is a gentler version of Dermabrasion without the pain or the expense to the pocketbook.

About three years ago, I was unemployed, needed money, and had the first inkling of wrinkles. I spent an obscene amount of money that I didn't really have on four dermabrasion sessions because I was young and vain. In a word, I can sum up my dermabrasion experience: "Ouch." That applies to both my face and my pocketbook. However, after the initial pain, my skin glowed. Ah, I may have been poor but at least my skin looked terrific.

So, when I heard about Origins Modern Friction Nature's Gentle Dermabrasion I had to check it out. At only $35 and the promise of delivering dermabrasion-quality exfoliation without the pain and suffering, this seemed like a dream come true.

The Promise
This is taken from their website:

This just in! It’s a scientific fact. Modern Friction™ measures up to clinical micro-dermabrasion. Origins conducted a side-by-side study comparing Modern Friction™ and clinical micro-dermabrasion. The results? Modern Friction™ is equally effective in reducing the look of lines, wrinkles and age spots and increasing smoothness and radiance. And it’s 2.5X more gentle!

The Test

I was a little skeptical that a little rice starch (the water rice is washed in) in a cream base would be able to deliver the results of getting your skin professionaly sand-blasted. Modern Friction is a thick off-white paste that comes in a 4 oz. opaque white jar with a green screw cap. It's a sturdy jar. I dropped it accidentally (gosh, is there a scrub to erase clumsiness??) and it luckily didn't crack.

The directions say that you apply it on dry skin in circular motions. You then add a little water to lather it up. Rinse. So deceptively simple.

I followed the directions, and really, it didn't feel like I was doing anything to my skin. I pressed a little harder to really work in the rice starch, and still it didn't feel like I was doing much. Have you ever used St. Ives' apricot scrub? The apricot scrub really feels like it's working because it's so rough on the skin. I rinsed. My skin felt really hot and was a deep pink. I was surprised that what felt like nothing actually did something, and that I was actually scrubbing too hard.

After my skin cooled down, my skin was incredibly smooth and soft.

You're supposed to do this 2 - 3 times a week. I followed the routine again 2 days later. This time I was much gentler in rubbing it on. I may be the kind of girl who likes it rough now and then, but Modern Friction proves that gentle and slow can be quite the winner. My skin glowed! When I woke up the next morning, my skin still felt incredibly soft and smooth.

I've used it five times and my pores do look smaller and my skin just looks much better. It also helped eliminate flakes, and I truly believe the fine line by my mouth is less noticeable.

So, Basically It's a Scrub, Right?

Uhm, not quite. According to Originas, Modern Friction is a buffing paste, because it has anti-aging properties that a regular facial scrub does not.

Dermabrasion or Modern Friction

Modern Friction hands down. If you ever had your skin sandblasted with aluminum oxide crystals, you would pick Modern Friction, too!

What Does It Smell Like?
This little number may contain lemon oil, bergamot and pepermint oil, but it just smelled very "green" to me. It has a non-offensive scent that smells very natural.

The Bottom Line
I love this product. It makes my skin look like a million bucks and just a dab will do ya. Truly worth the money!
