Clorox BathWand

Written: Jul 19 '05
Pros:The extended handle and swivel head makes cleaning easier.
Cons:Doesn't clean really dirty areas well.
The Bottom Line: Buy it if you want a device that helps you reach difficult areas.

I’m the first person that loves to walk into a clean bathroom. I want it to smell good, look good, and be clean. I also admit that I’m the last person in the world that loves to clean the bathrooms. So, much of my housecleaning life has been spent balancing the two extremes. I’m always looking for, “Clean bathrooms without the work of cleaning them.”

In my search for easy cleaning, I have discovered Clorox BathWand. This is definitely a step in the direction of “Clean bathrooms without the work of cleaning them.”

The Clorox BathWand is a disposable tub & shower cleaning system that comes in a box with all that you need to begin. You have to assemble the wand but once assembled, you’re done because the assembly is permanent. You don’t have to take it apart and put it back together each time you use it. Putting it together is easy. You screw two handle sections together until they lock into place. You then snap the handle into the head (logo side up) and voila!

Along with the wand, the company includes a couple of the disposable heads and a white plastic hook that enables you to hang it up. The pads are what is not permanent and are what you will have to buy and replace. The average price that I’ve found for these is about $2.99 for five of them. On the box it implies that you use the pad and then toss it away. I’ve found that when cleaning small areas, I can reuse the pad. That helps make the pads more cost efficient. The pad has the cleaning Clorox cleaner in it and it is activated when you wet it.

The pad is attached by sticking onto the Velcro like head. Clorox calls it the “fluffy side”. It does hold nicely. Once a pad is attached you wet the pad with water to activate the cleanser. You may need to wet it again occasionally as you clean. When you are finished cleaning, you then rinse the surfaces you cleaned with water and dispose of the pad.

What I liked about this product

I really like the long handle. It is about 23 inches long and since I’m vertically challenged, it really helped me to reach the top section of the tiled wall that encloses my bathtub. While you lose the pressure with the leverage of going higher than your head, it still does the job.

This wand has been reviewed by various arthritis websites and is recommended by them to help those with arthritis reach and clean difficult places for them to reach.

While I don’t think that the cleaning solution is strong enough to do a thorough job on heavily soap scum surfaces or mold areas, it is good enough if you use it on areas that you routinely keep clean. The odor is minimal but does make the bath smell clean when finished. The minimal odor may have to do with the minimal amount of cleanser in each pad. To be truly helpful in cleaning all types of surfaces and conditions, I’d like there to be some sort of cleanser that I could add to the pad as I clean.

I really like the swivel head of the wand. It really does allow you to clean corners and change directions easily. I use it on my tiled tub walls, the tub itself, and the bathroom floor for quick clean-ups.

What I didn’t like about this product

Other than the weak cleanser, the main drawback of this (and other products that are similar in design) is that once you’ve used the cleaner on the area you have to wash it off with water. Nothing on this wand assists you in doing this. I find rinsing to be a pain and I usually remove the head and wet a scrub towel, wrap it around the head, and wipe it down using the wand. Not the greatest but it works okay. My tile goes to the ceiling around the tub and spraying it with the shower head only rinses some of the area, so other rinsing must be done. I’d really like a cleaner that doesn’t need to be rinsed but…this isn’t it.

Overall

Overall, I think that the kit is worth buying. (I would like to thank Fleishman-Hillard for sending me the Clorox BathWand in exchange for my honest review of the product.) Once you have the kit you can adjust it to work and meet your individual needs. The longer handle and the swivel action are really great and I like the convenience of it. As far as 5 pad refills, that seems a bit costly for what you get. However, if you have physical problems that interfere with your ability to reach and clean areas, this product would really be helpful.

Warnings from label: Caution Eye Irritant. (Instructions are on the box telling you what to do in case you get some solution in your eyes.) Keep Out of the Reach of Children. Physical and Chemical Hazards are given (example: Do not miss with bleach containing products or with other household cleaning products.)

So, Do I Recommend It?

I do recommend it with explanations to friends. The explanations are that it doesn’t work in heavily dirty areas but if a person is looking for a quick clean product to keep up what has been cleaned thoroughly, then this is a really helpful and convenient product.

While I think it should get an A for concept and design, it gets a B for effectiveness and it doesn’t produce a “Clean bathroom without the work of getting it clean.”
