attention to detail is important--but details were missed in this review (Reply to this comment)
by ranger1978
The review title says "www.ellisislandrecords.org: twenty two million immigrants became Americans on Ellis Island."
Right from the start he has it wrong. The National Park Service estimates between 12 - 16 million immigrants came through Ellis Island (not 22 million, as he states), and they tend to err on the side of discretion, so usually use the 12 million number. NOT A SINGLE IMMIGRANT BECAME AN AMERICAN AT ELLIS ISLAND during their years of operation as an immigrant processing station (1892-1924), unless they were born there (in which case, they weren't an immigrant!) They became naturalized citizens in the communities where they lived, not when they came through Ellis.
The Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island Foundation has been called a pushy, top-heavy foundation with overpaid managers in articles written about it. They've had their hands slapped a few times but are still in control of the purse strings.
Find a way to celebrate your family and its immigrant history without enriching this greedy organization. Look into your own records, and frame them yourself. Look in your kitchen for family recipes, and cook them. Frame the originals (see "The Ellis Island Immigrant Cook Book" by Tom Bernardin for more ideas.) The reviewer of this site cast his glance over the operation without any critical analysis of the practices of the primary "concessionaire" out there.
As a tourist site, Ellis Island meets the expectations of most visitors. Serious researchers will find excellent help from the National Park Service librarians and researchers (skip the Foundation folks). Walk around the island, enjoy the displays and the views, visit the gift shop to buy a good book or two and read them at your leisure.

.....fairly recent review of Ellis Island.
I had picked up on in a year or so ago. Now they are making a few dollars on the Island selling framed pictures of the ships and copies of the original manifests.
I found my grandparents here. My mom was amazed and went to tears as she studied the manifest with information about her parents, when I showed it to her..
It really is a great site.

Little Bear (hehehe),
Now that you are awake (je bent nu echt wakker, toch?), you realise that it was never the Island I was interested in. It is just the records that were created there that I am after.
If I ever plan to immigrate (U.S.A. customs has this silly legal trick of considering every visitor an immigrant) there, I'll let you know :-)

I just noticed "ellis island" in the title and thought, "Wow, he was in NY? My husband and I could have taken him to the island." Then I realized that you cheated via their website. I will check out the site, but you ought to check out Ellis Island itself one day.
I enjoyed the review and almost meeting you.

to have this information.
I heard about it on the evening news (local) but they glossed over it so quickly I never did get the name of the web site. Now, I have it bookmarked thanks to you.
This review will go on to some people who are really on to this sort of thing.
Thanks,
Ed

Wondering (Reply to this comment)
by splace
Is this the same feature as found on Ellis Island itself? I believe that they have a computer in the corner (don't remember corner of what) where you can search for passengers...just wondering if anyone knows about that...
Good and Informative Review, by the way.

..Central Europe, and we have copies of many records in our hands, I have always assumed they were fairly complete. Thanks for the tip -- I'm going to go back do some cross-referencing on this site and see what else I come up with.
FYI, my last name Peters is derived from Petrovic, which the good ol' boys at the Ellis Island port of entry decided to change to Peters because they didn't want to ask my paternal grandfather how to spell it.
Thanks, Mobi. Good post.

great job. My husband's cousin is a Rabbi and he just e-mailed us about this site. We have been there and my grandparents are on the wall (I had them put there). My husband couldn't find his family, but Joshua, the Rabbi, found them at this site - name was spelled wrong. Thanks again for letting people know. jo
