The Bottom Line You can go very wrong if you ignore your needs and preferences in tanning products. Check this out!
It's a pretty common thing today. Everywhere you go is evidence of it... People are baking themselves! They're sun-worshippers, tanning-salon-ers (fake n bake) and they're just inviting a host of health problems in the future. Blasted fools! But you can't help but want in on the action, can you? Haha... Join the Club. Okay, first, you're going to need to understand this point completely: *YOU DO NOT WANT TO BURN, YOU WANT TO GRADUALLY GET JUST ENOUGH EXPOSURE TO EXPRESS THE MELANIN IN YOUR SKIN* You see, melanin is the stuff in the pigment of our skin that, when exposed to UV radiation, turns into that lovely tan color. If you kill off the skin with the good melanin in it, you're going to lose that tan. So, however hard it may be, if you want it to last and not cause you pain, you gotta go slow! Now, you may not really know how to get there. But it seems like a good idea to get some tanning product to help you along. This is a crucial point. If you buy the wrong one, there is no end of the things that could go wrong... Actually there is. Ha. But none of these possibilities are very appealing.. * You could get a bad burn. Yes, blistering, acutely painful sores all over your body that greatly increase your likelihood of developing skin cancer and way premature aging. Not cool! * You could get one with too much SPF so you won't tan. It may sound ridiculous, but if you don't read some products carefully, you can wind up with more SPF than you expected. * You could wind up with a product that's totally wrong for you. You could find it's really sticky, gooey, nasty, stinky, or doesn't suit you so your result isn't as good as it could be. Here's a little quiz that will help you decide what kind of product is for you: ---------------------------------------------------------- PART 1- SPF 1) My natural hair color is... a) black/ dark brown b) medium brown c) blonde/ red 2) When I was a kid... a) I never had a really bad sunburn b) I had a painful sunburn or two c) Every time I went outside for any length of time, I'd burn pretty badly. 3) My skin tone is... a) Dark b) Medium c) Fair ---------------------------------------------------------- Now... Here's how much SPF you're going to need if you answered: Mostly a's- Wow! Melanin is in no shortage here! Pretty much zero SPF needed here, you should be good to go but you can beef it up if you want to, especially for the first few exposures. Mostly b's- Average Melanin in your skin, eh? Same here. You're going to want a tanning product with a bit of SPF, like SPF 4 after you get your base tan. But for the first few exposures, you'd be best off either using the SPF 4 and not staying out too long, or staying out for longer with SPF 15. Mostly c's- Where's the Melanin? Ay yay yay! Poor baby! You're going to have a tough time getting that tan, aren't you? Well, the key for people like you is to go up in increments. Start small, because if you stay out too long, any tan you had is going to go away. In the beginning, you're going to need SPF 15 and to not stay out so long that you get very pink. You will get a little pink, but if it's not too much, some of it'll stay and you'll go from there. Just build it up, you can do it! ---------------------------------------------------------- Okay next part of this quiz will answer this confusing question: Gel, Spray, Oil, Lotion... What's the One for Me?!? ---------------------------------------------------------- PART 2- Preferences 1) The way I'm planning on getting a tan is... a) Lying in the sun for hours, moving only to flip myself over. b) Sitting out whenever I can, but not in a bathing suit or anything, just with shorts and a t-shirt, reading a good book in the sun. Nothing too official, I just want to get tan on the part of my body that people can see. c) On the go! I don't have time to just lie around, I was hoping I could do it while actually living my life. 2) As far as consistency goes... a) I love to be all greasy, it's dead sexy. b) I don't mind a little shine, but not too much goo. c) Ew... I hate to be slimey! 3) While tanning I'll also be... a) What else would I do? I devoted this day to tanning dagnammit! b) Doing some light activity, but trying to keep some focus on getting an even tan. c) I'm not really planning on putting an effort into it. It'll happen naturally if I'm in the sun, doing my own thing, right? 4) My skin breaks out... a) Almost never b) If I don't wash it c) A lot! I have oily skin. --------------------------------------------------------- Now... To see which kind of product is right for you... Look at your answers, if you got: Mostly a's- TANNING OIL You're pretty focused on tanning. If you're just going to be lying around, you may as well be greasy, right? Plus this stuff is serious tanning material! Good thing you don't react to having oil on your skin, because it's just right for you! For you, I recommend: NO-AD Hawaiian Style Dark Tanning Oil or pretty much any Hawaiian Tropics Dark Tanning Oil, depending on your needs. ---------------------------------------------------------- Mostly b's- TANNING GEL/ TANNING SPRAY You fit right in the average category. You don't mind too much shine, but you don't want to be cakey and slimey. You might not enjoy full-on, hard-core tanning, and that's probably for the best until you get a good base tan. It won't be long if you get good gel or spray. For you, I recommend: NO-AD Australian Style Dark Tanning Glitter Gel (if you don't like the glitter, you can get the plain gel.) *Note: You ~will~ be cakey if you over-apply this, so just one layer!* Banana Boat Dark Tanning Oil Spray with SPF 4 --------------------------------------------------------- Mostly c's- TANNING LOTION You're too busy knocking around town to be all greasy and nasty, but you still want that golden, chestnut tan. Who would put that nasty slime all over their bodies? You couldn't do that, what with your irritable skin. You just want something you can put on in the morning, and stay there all day, tanning your skin, without constantly reminding you that it's there. For you, I recommend: Banana Boat Dark Tanning Lotion with SPF 4 *FABULOUS, SEE REVIEW!* ----------------------------------------------------------- So, I hoped this helped your decision, but just remember that you know your body. You know when you're getting burned, when to come in from the sun. You know your body the best, and buy what suits you, but if this quiz revealed a specific need or preference, I'd definitely go for that one first. Stay cool! :) |
