The Musician's 80's Mix

The Bottom Line It's twenty quality songs from a decade that wasn't so quality.

I know what you must be thinking. 1980's, Musician? What drugs are you on? I'd say opium, and I'd also say that I know, the 80's are probably the worst decade in history when it comes to fashion, art, cinema, and music, but this disgruntled decade produced some gems when all's said and done. I prepared this just in case the event would ever occur that you throw a party for eighties music enthusiasts and don't know what to play. Well, I'll just keep on telling myself that, and, without further ado, here is my 80's music mix.

(this is actually an actual mix of songs that I made a tape of for my car!!)

1. "Welcome to the Jungle" - Guns 'N Roses
I good, aggressive song to begin a mix filled with hair-metal rock. Even though these guys are seen today as losers in extreme, they combined for some pretty good songs on "Appetite For Destruction", there freshman release. Also, everyone has to admit that Slash is one of the best guitarists of all time. 'Nuff said.

2. "Hot For Teacher" - Van Halen
Another one of the best guitarists of all time, Eddie Van Halen, rocks with the dominating drums of his brother Alex Van Halen, and David Lee Roth's enthusiastic vocals. This song has spectacular guitar, from the classic album "1984".

3. "No Sleep 'Till Brooklyn" - Beastie Boys
A guilty pleasure which I'll stick up for. The half-rap, half-rock song is a heavy taste of having fun, Beastie Boys style. From the classic "Licensed to Ill".

4. "Money For Nothing" - Dire Straits
Mark Knopfler is a guitar god, and this song is a great demonstration of why. Sting does back-up vocals on this megahit from Dire Straits' 1985 release "Brothers In Arms". A memorable riff based song that is one of my favourites.

5. "Rockin In The Free World" - Neil Young
Just in case we are forgetting about morals during this mix, we include Neil Young's classic about homeless people. Oh, yeah, it also it a fantastic rock song from the 1989 release "Freedom".

6. "Nightrain" - Guns 'N Roses
This song isn't as well known, but is a great one. Trust me. It features great guitar and is a surprisingly well written song for GNR. Also from "Appetite For Destruction".

7. "Fight For Your Right" - Beastie Boys
A must have from "Licensed To Ill". Everyone knows this one, and it's guaranteed to get a party started.

8. "Panama" - Van Halen
This song is awesome. It's my favourite from "1984", and it is more classic guitar rock.

9. "Bad To The Bone" - George Thorogood
Everyone knows this one too, and it's a great song from an under appreciated guitarist. You hear some great little guitar gimmicks on this one, and it contains an amazing sax solo.

10. "Paradise City" - Guns 'N Roses
Axl and company strike again with this six minute track and I find it hard to believe that GNR even wrote it. It's a fantastic song none the less.

11. "Sweet Chile O'Mine" - Guns 'N Roses
They return...again! This is their best all-time song, and it has vicious lead guitar as well as a memorable guitar hook.

12. "Just Like Heaven" - The Cure
This is one of my wuss songs that I just love. It's a beautiful song full of keyboards, pleasant guitars, and Robert Smith.

13. "Comfortably Numb" - Pink Floyd
Okay, about this. Although "The Wall" was released in like September of 1979, it was the top-selling album of all 1980, and that is justification of how I can put this song and a couple of others in this collection. It's a great song though, with one of the best guitar solos of all time courtesy of David Gilmore. It rocks.

14. "Jump" - Van Halen
No eighties collection is complete without it. It has an amazing combination of guitars and keyboards, both by Eddie Van Halen, and is a classic pop tune, no questions asked.

15. "Walk Of Life" - Dire Straits
Now it's time for Knopfler's keyboard song. It's a recognizable, fun song that is great to sing along to.

16. "Mother" - Pink Floyd
It slows down a little bit here for this acoustic campfire song from "The Wall". It has an amazing solo as well by Gilmour.

17. "Lovesong" - The Cure
A really delicate song that has beautiful lyrics and an overall impression. As you can notice, near the end of the mix it really slows down. Whatever.

18. "Hey You" - Pink Floyd
A great acoustic song that everyone is bound to recognize. Great song.

19. "No More Lonely Nights" - Wings
Probably one of the best love songs of all time, thanks to McCartney and company. Even has a giant guitar solo at the end which brings about an unexpected end to a beautiful song.

20. "Another Brick In The Wall, Part 2" - Pink Floyd
A must have. One of the best songs ever made, let alone made in the eighties. It has a phenomenal guitar solo as well as lyrics of anthemic proportions.

And there you have it folks, the best songs from the worst ever decade in music and art. Any suggestions/comments are welcome, but let me just say that I have an actual mix of these songs, and they get the job done for me.

Peace

The Musician
