The Bottom Line Our children our precious, we need car seats to protect them in our cars. Be informed and pick the best one for you.

Having your child in a car seat is one of the most important things we can do to protect our children. We never plan to have an accident, but they can happen without notice.

My girls and I were recently involved in a head on collision, there was no warning, I simply began a blind curve to find another car in my lane and coming at me at 50 miles per hour. There was no time to react, and my only thoughts were for my three precious girls ages 5, 3, and 9 months sitting in the back seat.

Since none of us want to put our car seats through that kind of test, I'll share with you the things that I have discovered in hopes that you will never have to use it. You just never know what is coming around the corner.

Please also remember that car seats have to be replaced when they have been in a car accident no matter how minor. It's worth the extra money to keep them safe.
There are basically three different types of restraints for car seats. Which one is best is really a matter of opinion, but I think it's important to know about all three.

The first one and the second are about the same. They both have the Three Point Harness. This is a harness that goes over the shoulders and fastens between the legs. They come with just a simple three point harness or ones with a front shield that comes over the head. Neither have been shown to not offer the best protection in a car accident. The reason being, they don't hold your child in the car seat as well. It allows the body to move around more and that can cause more neck injuries as well as other injuries.

The third type of car seat utilizes the Five Point Harness. This harness goes over the shoulders and over the legs and fastens between the legs. This harness is more recommend because it holds them down in the seat. This type has been rated the best of all harness systems for car seats, by many different consumer product researchers. This was also the harness system that was used for our girls and they all walked away with just minor bruises.

The other thing that is important to remember is having a car seat that will fit in your car. Almost every place where you can buy a car seat will allow you to try before you buy. Different car seats will sit in your car differently. To protect your child you need to make sure the car seat sits in your car properly. It may take a couple of tries to find the perfect one. It's hard when you fall in love with a style of car seat, but it doesn't fit right in your car. Fashion is great, but safety is the most important thing.

Making sure a car seat is properly secured is another important thing. This car seat is the only thing that will be protecting your child in an accident. Take the time to make sure it's installed tight and properly. That doesn't mean just once, that means every time you get into the car you check to make sure it's still tight. There are many places you go to make sure you car seat is properly installed. Check with your local police department as well as fire station to see if they offer those services. Many do and it's only a phone call to find out.

Our children our are our most precious things. We try to protect them everyday, making sure they are safe in the car is just as important as making sure they are safe at home.

Take care and thanks for reading.
