The Bottom Line Ten different albums from ten different artists, all of which rock!
Actually, this isn't quite my ten favourite albums. For variety's sake, I only included every artist once, because if I didn't all ten albums would pretty much be between Radiohead and the Beatles. They're also done in no particular order, and are all ROCK albums. Well, let's get on with it. 1. Zeppelin IV - Led Zeppelin A fantastic disc that I love to death. Every single song on it is amazing ("Stairway to Heaven", "Black Dog", "When The Levee Breaks" to name a few), and I could listen to this disc alone forever. Jimmy Page is the best guitarist ever in my opinion, and this disc proves it because it features crazy guitar solos as well as complex arrangements. Rock on!!! Runner-ups: Zeppelin I, Zeppelin II, Zeppelin III, Houses of the Holy 2. After The Gold Rush - Neil Young I find this album, and Neil Young's career for the most part, is underrated by classic music fans. This is an enticing album that features such hits as "Southern Man", "After The Gold Rush", and "Don't Let It Bring You Down". This was Young's first of many classic albums, and is my favourite solo album by the best Canadian musician ever. Runner-ups: Harvest 3. Dark Side Of The Moon - Pink Floyd You gotta have this one. It is PF's most critically acclaimed album as well as their most commercially successful album, and some say is the best album of all time. I say that it's up there, with such outstanding tracks as "Time", "Money", and "Breathe". It's a wonderful piece of art. Runners-up: Wish You Were Here, The Wall 4. Abbey Road - The Beatles This one is my favourite Beatles album of all time, and it contains some of the most lovely music ever made. The music is fantastic, as is the overall impression left by the album. All the songs on this album are hits, but the ones that really stand out are "Come Together", "Something", "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window", and "Golden Slumbers". Awesome music! For more, see the review "An Epic Of Beatle Proportions". Runners-up: The White Album, Magical Mystery Tour, Sgt. Pepper, Rubber Soul, Revolver 5. The Doors - The Doors Their first and best album is a fantastic collection of many different types of songs. They have classic rock 'n roll ("Break On Through", "Light My Fire"), blues rock ("Back Door Man"), opera ("Whisky Bar"), and the unclassifiable masterpiece "The End". It's an album of emotion and genius. 6. OK Computer - Radiohead This one is probably my favourite of all time, but that doesn't necessarily mean that I think it's the best of all time. It rocks, yet at times is also very touching and sad. My fave songs include "Paranoid Android", "Exit Music", "Karma Police", and "Lucky". For more, see the review "Best Of All Time?". Runners-up: Kid A, The Bends 7. The Fragile - Nine Inch Nails Here's one that was really overlooked. It's a beautiful album that is an emotional and personal piece of wonderful music. It rocks too, with songs like "The Day The World Went Away", "We're In This Together", "Into The Void", and "Starf*ckers, Inc.". 8. Who's Next - The Who This is what rock 'n roll is supposed to be. This is the most energetic album made by the Who, and is a showcase for great guitars, bass, drums, and vocals. Songs like "Baba O'Riley", "My Wife", "Behind Blue Eyes", and the classic "Won't Get Fooled Again" make this disc what it is, and do so very well at that. For more, see the review "Who's Next Is For Keepin'". Runners-up: Quadrophenia, Tommy, The Who Sell Out 9. Down On The Upside - Soundgarden Bet ya didn't see this one coming? This is one of the most underrated albums of all time, and I can't believe it is because Soundgarden were such a good band when they made this. It features such heavy rock classics such as "Pretty Noose", "Blow Up The Outside World", "Tighter & Tighter", and my favourite "Burden In My Hand". This album is my surprise album, and if you listen to it it'll surprise you too because it's so good. 10. Are You Experienced - Jimi Hendrix Jimi!!!! Classic. You have to have this tribute to feedback, distortion, and brilliant guitar. This is a great album, with songs like "Purple Haze", "Manic Depression", "Hey Joe", "Fire", "Foxey Lady", and "Red House". Awesome guitar from Jimi, but let's not forget Mitch Mitchell's incredible drumming on this album. Runners-up: Electric Ladyland And there you have it folks! My ten favourite individual albums by some of my ten favourite music acts. I tried to mix it up too, between amazing guitars (Jimi, Zeppelin) and great song writing (Neil Young, the Beatles). Any comments/suggestions are welcome, and I hope you enjoyed. Peace The Musician |
