I read an article about contaminated fruits and vegetables being a more common reason food poisoning and illnesses than from meats. After reading more reports of local people getting sick on fruits and learning that water doesnt always remove harmful things we decided to search for a produce cleaner.
I found a bottle of Veggie Wash in the fruit section of my grocery store. There wasnt a selection of products; this was the only brand I saw so got it.
The directions for use indicate to spray the fruit or vegetable and scrub for 20-30 seconds then rinse. Softer produce, such as strawberries, can be washed by adding ¼ cup of the solution to ½ a sink of water and swishing.
It is in a container similar to a cleaning product. It is easy to hold and easy to squirt. The nozzle squirts a great deal out at a time so the item is saturated quickly.
This has a very concentrated fresh orange scent to it. For awhile we were cautious to use this because we didnt want our food to taste like orange but after awhile we realized that there isnt any orange taste to the spray at all.
The bottle claims to have been tested in a laboratory to safely removes waxes, chemicals and soil. I have no way of knowing if this truly removes bacteria but I feel confident that it does. The fruits and vegetables appear cleaner and the dirt is removed faster than washing with just water.
Mushrooms are the only produce that should be avoided since mushrooms are porous.
I was pleased to find that the product is 100% biodegradable and made of products that are safe for consumption. Ingredients as listed on the bottle: Water, natural cleaners made from corn and coconut, lemon oil, sodium citrate (a natural derivative of citrus fruit), glycerin (from coconut oil), and grapefruit seed extract.
My Experience
All of the harmful things are destroyed in the cooking process so we dont use this when washing something such as potatoes which will be thoroughly cooked. We save this for things that wont be cooked such as apples. We also use it on things that have a layer outside that we cut through such as an orange because the process of cutting can drag the bacteria from the skin into the fruit.
This 16 ounce bottle retails for $4 which I though was a little expensive but found that it lasts for a very long time.
One thing that I noticed is that I am able so save more water because I'm scrubbing with the product instead of under running water.
Remembering to use the spray is the biggest challenge. This is a keep out of reach of children product so its not kept in a convenient place. We usually wash all of the fruits when we bring them home from the store to eliminate forgetting and so we dont rush and not do it correctly. Then they are ready to eat without worry.
Overall
Contaminants are easily washed away with this natural product. I no longer worry about the germ or whose hands touched the fruits and vegetables that I choose. The product will reduce the risk of getting food poisoning and will help the presentation by making the fruits appear clean and inviting.
