I am thoroughly convinced that the person that installed the ceramic tile on the bathroom walls was a complete moron, no, I take that back, he was a moronic imbecile. It all started when the weather broke a few months ago. I would hear a strange noise followed by the sound of something falling in the upstairs bathroom. Being slightly dense I didnt put two and two together and come up with four right away. Ignoring the noises I would diligently pick up the tiles that would fall off the wall and replace them with the glue that he left for me. This should have been my first indication that I got ripped off - if someone leaves you something to repair their work rest assured they did a crappy job. After having a real tile installer check out the job and fall over laughing at the small bucket of tiles that had fallen off I was informed that the first person didnt use the right kind of adhesive to set the tiles, nor the correct grout around the tiles. He told me that I could pay him to rip out the tiles and reinstall them or just get a tube of Krazy Glue and replace them as they popped off. He then proceeded to tell me that I should take the person to small claims court to recover the money I paid him for the install job as well as time and materials supplied.
It will be several months before the court date arrives so until then I am stuck with a tile or two popping off every week or so. It might seem trivial to wait until the court date to recover my money to then hand it over to someone else but its the principal of the matter. Why should I have money tied up when its not a complete necessity. The regular Krazy Glue worked nice but it dried too quickly; by time I covered the entire tile with it the first section was almost dry. Thats when someone suggested using the no run gel version. This worked a lot better and allowed me to move the tile around a little once I placed it on the wall so it would be centered evenly. Most of the grout that he used has since chipped away or fallen out of the joint spaces - another thing that I am ticked about. The up side is that these tiles arent inside the shower, just on the walls surrounding it so while it looks pretty nasty when the tiles fall off, the bathroom is still functional for the most part.
Borden Krazy Glue No Run Gel
Ive only used this on a few things around the house, most of the odd jobs that require a strong glue get the regular Krazy Glue treatment. For things that need positioning [like the tiles] or a stronger bond, I use this stuff. The tried the regular Krazy Glue on the rubber trim around one of the air conditioners and it would last about two weeks before it would start to pull away. One application of this and its still firmly in place and not showing any signs of peeling apart or away from the window frame. I think the reason the regular Krazy Glue didnt hold was the amount of vibration the rubber was receiving and the fact that I couldnt apply a thick enough line to get a good contact between the two surfaces. Well have to wait to see if this stands the test of time but so far its still holding perfectly. This isnt as watery or liquid as other varieties of Krazy Glue so it is the perfect pick for larger jobs or ones that require you to fill in an area or where a piece might be missing. This does take a little longer to dry if you are filling in an area so what ever you do - resist the urge to touch it to see if it is dry. It might take this a while to dry on surfaces but when you get it on your skin, it dries within a few seconds.
The gel flows out smoothly and evenly if you apply a light pressure to the tube so make sure you dont go crazy when you are using this or you might just find yourself stuck to what ever you are working on. This worked well on the backs of the ceramic tiles as well as on them; when one of them fell and cracked in half I figured Id have to chuck it in the trash and look at the three inch by three inch blank space on the wall until the situation was resolved in court. Since I didnt have anything to lose I decided to try the gel version of Krazy Glue to see if it would hold the pieces of the tile in place even though a few small pieces splintered off. After letting it set for about fifteen minutes I picked it up and gave it a wiggle - the two pieces were joined together perfectly. There was a little bit of gel pressed out of the edges that I should have wiped off while it was still wet but it was no big deal, the tiles are eventually going to get removed and replaced by a real installer.
I picked up a tube of this for $1.50, the usual price for Krazy Glue products in this area. The important thing to keep in mind is that there are tons of knock off items that look like they are the real deal [Borden / Elmer products] but they arent and wont give you the same holding and bonding power. Before you use this you will want to make sure that you read the package to see what this can [ceramic, plastic, rubber, metal, glass etc] and cant be used on [carpeting, people, pets, items that come in contact with food etc]. The back of the package also gives you information on what to do if this comes in contact with your skin, eyes or mouth. Please make sure you read and understand this before you use this product.
The Bottom Line
While I openly admit that I use the regular version of Krazy Glue for just about everything around the house I will say that this is the best thing for larger items, things with cracks or chips in them and repairs that are exposed to the elements. The rubber trim around the air conditioner is cold on the inside and hot on the outside so I am sure that is one of the reasons that the All Purpose Krazy Glue had a tough time keeping up with it 0 I just couldnt get a thick enough line on it for it to hold up to the vibration from the unit and the temperature changes on both sides of it. Now that I have tried this out on a few things around the house theres no doubt that Ill keep this around for larger jobs or ones that require positioning or a stronger bond.
As always, thanks for the read!
