The Musician's Ten Favourite MoviesJul 29 '01 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line My 10 favourite movies, even though I'm a little out of my league (a musician reviewing movies). Well, it's all good. I guess you can tell I just figured out how to do topics, because the last three reviews I've done haven't been products. This list isn't that accurate because I'm just thinking of these off the top of my head, but here is my ten most favourite movies. Also, because I honestly put one in front of the other, they are in no particular order. 1. 12 Monkeys This is such a cool cult movie. This movie stars Bruce Willis as a time traveler from the future who's goal is to stop a deadly disease from breaking out, all the while he is questioning his own sanity because of the mental wear and tear produced by time traveling. It also features Brad Pitt, who plays a deranged environmentalist who is somehow involved in the events taking place. I've seen it about ten times and I still get confused at times, but that's the best part of this movie, is that you get something new every time you watch it. 2. Lawrence Of Arabia Whoa. I was blown away when I first saw this movie, mostly because of the complexity of Lawrence's character. Since this is off the cuff, I can't tell you who plays the leading character, but he does a brilliant job of it. It's a tale of an English soldier who is assigned to work in Arabia, and through certain events and his exposure to the desert, his character changes drastically to the point where one might question his sanity. It's really long (something like three hours), but is never boring. It's definitely a must-see. 3. Citizen Kane Surprisingly, this movie isn't on many other people's top ten lists. It's the best movie ever made, but I guess no one really loves it except me. It's the story of the life of Kane, played perfectly by Orson Wells who also directs this film, and his struggles and triumphs. It also has a delicious mystery about it involving Kane's last words: "Rosebud". Best movie ever, but necessarily my most favored movie ever. 4. Mallrats It really should be a crime to put Mallrats next to Lawrence of Arabia and Citizen Kane, but I don't care. Mallrats is the one movie that I study, because it's so full of subplots and awesome characters that you can't help but enjoy yourself. Directed by the brilliant Kevin Smith, this movie is a story about a guy who loses his love and tries to win her back. Sounds pretty predictable, right? Well it's not when you have characters such as Walter the talk show contestant, the naked psychic, Willam (if memory serves me correctly) the sailboat guy, Jay and Silent Bob, and, my hero, Brody, who is played incredibly by the talented Jason Lee. I almost know this whole movie off by heart, and I enjoy now even more than I did when it was new to me. 5. Apocalypse Now "......the horror.......the horror..." Man, this movie is the perfect medium for coolness and well done art. Staring Martin Sheen as a soldier who is assigned to kill a deranged lunatic general in the heart of the jungle, who is played flawlessly by Marlon Brando. This films also features Robert Duvall, Dennis Hopper, Donald Sutherland (I think), and if you look hard, a young Lawrence Fishburn and Harrison Ford. Also, the music used during the film is perfect, like the beginning with the Doors' "The End". 6. 2001: A Space Odyssey This film made me think so much after I saw it for the first time. Directed by Stanley Kubrick, this movie is about a space expedition gone horribly wrong because of the powerful spaceship's artificially intelligent computer, HAL 9000. It even gets crazy and dreamlike at the end, when one of the astronauts find out about the ulterior motive they were sent into space. A fantastic movie. 7. Outbreak An action-packed movie starring Dustin Hoffman as a hard working military doctor who is trying to uncover a government conspiracy while at the same time trying to cure a lethal disease that has taken hold of a small American town. It also features Rene Russo, Cuba Gooding Jr., Donald Sutherland, and Morgan Freeman. It's really exciting and is frightening because of the possibility that it could actually happen. 8. Aliens (Alien 2) This movie, and T2: Judgment Day, are the only movies where the sequel is actually better than the original. Aliens features Sigourney Weaver as Ripley, a cargo pilot who was cryogenically frozen for many years after a near-fatal encounter with an Alien. She is awakened by Paul Reiser and is coaxed into going back to the planet where the deadly Aliens originated from. It's a terrifying movie that is very well done by James Cameron, and is a non-stop rollercoaster ride of thrills, chills, and spills. God, I sound like Ebert. 9. Ferris Bueler's Day Off The feel good movie of the century. It's the story of three fun-loving teenagers who skip school to have a day of fun, despite multiple character's trying to ruin there fun. It's full of jokes and things that everyone would love to do, but never have the guts to, or when they do never manage to pull it off quite like Matthew Broderick (who plays Ferris) can. Besides, (I forget his name. The guy in the Boston Bruins jersey.) says one of my favourite lines to the principal when he says: "Pardon my french, but you're an idiot!" Well, it was funny when he said it. 10. Star Wars No doubts about it. Who can say no to Luke, Han, Leia, and most of all, Chewie? No one. It's the best sci-fi film series of all time, and the original is the finest. The whole Star Wars universe is awesome, and George Lucas does a good job directing, but the real highlight is in the characters played by Mark Hamil, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Alec Guiness. Some runners up were: Easy Rider, The Matrix, The Omega Man, Traffic, The Breakfast Club, and The Omen, to name a few. Some movies I knew wouldn't be in the list (worst movies of all time in my opinion): John Carpenter's Escape From L.A., C.H.U.D. (for more, see my review "So very, very bad"), Batman & Robin, Battlefield: Earth, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III (remember that?). Well, I'll probably change my mind in half an hour, but this is it as it stands now. I recommend one in all to give these movies a chance if you haven't already, and I hope you enjoyed.
