I believe it's only a problem with VIA KT133 chipset motherboards, not so much Athlon systems in general.
I have almost exactly the same soundcard (Aureal SQ2500) paired with a KT133 motherboard, and the only issue I've encountered is that it doesn't always awake from sleep mode properly (the sound card, not the system). Of course, now that I run the United Devices client 24/7 I have no use for sleep mode anyway :-).
