The Bottom Line It might be somewhat time consuming to prepare & apply a self-tanner but the results are worth it!
Several months ago, I was flipping through channels & stopped on the Home Shopping Network channel. They happened to be demonstrating a self-tanning product on two models with different skin tones. I watched, with my finger still on the “up” button of the remote, as the spokeswoman applied this dark brown cream to one leg & one arm of each of the models. I became enticed when the pale forearm of the blonde model became instantly bronzed when it was applied. I then retracted my finger from the “up” button & turned up the volume. I listened as the demonstrator talked about the performance of this “miracle” tanning lotion. TOMA’S Tan Perfect Instant Tanning Lotion. I was skeptical, nevertheless I put down the remote & watched the remainder of HSN’s presentation on TOMA’S tanning lotion. The tan affect was immediate & was a beautiful non-orange, bronze color. The gal even went so far as to hold up a real orange vs. the TOMA tanned legs. Because it has a Color Guide, or pigment, added, this tanner went on dark so you could see exactly where the product was applied. The Color Guide in TOMA’S tanning lotion washes off in the shower, leaving the product that actually tans the skin.(DHA). The generic brand of self-tanning lotion that I’d purchased in the spring had turned my legs an orangish color, but it only cost $3.99 at the drug store. HSN wanted almost $30 plus shipping & handling for this TOMA stuff. The TOMA tan would stay on my “wish list for now. Then earlier this summer I received my LTD Commodities catalog in the mail. Skimming through it, on page 83, there was TOMA’s Tan Perfect Tanning Lotion for $18.95! I ordered it right away & hoped that it wouldn’t disappoint me. After almost two months of using it, I have had great results! And since TOMA’S Tan Perfect isn’t listed here at Epinion’s, I’ve opted to tell you about it while I tell you how I achieve good results. HOW TO APPLY A SELF-TANNER Choose a tinted self-tanner (such as TOMA’S.) There are many other products that contain a tint such as Clinique, Neutrogena, & Estee Lauder. It makes it much easier when you’re not applying an invisible formula to your skin. You’ll be able to see where you’ve accumulated too much lotion & blend it in BEFORE it dries. Reduces the chance for streaks & having a tan spot where it’s not wanted! Exfoliate. (TOMA came with a 5 oz. bottle of body scrub & poof sponge to aid in getting rid of those lotion trapping dead skin cells.) Exfoliating in the shower makes for a smoother application, aiding in a more even tanned result. Use a body scrub or a sponge & your regular shower gel & moderately scrub the areas to be tanned. Knees & elbows need extra attention. Apply your self-tanner only when you’ve got some time to kill & won’t have to get dressed for at least 30 minutes. Dressing too soon could cause the lotion to rub off AND stain your clothing. I just wear my robe after application. Drying time will depend on the level of moisture in your skin & the humidity & temperature. Try not to cause yourself to perspire...take this time to relax! Here we go! Squeeze a small amount of lotion onto the palm of your hand. (TOMA’S provided one pair of rubber gloves to use & rinse for reuse. Application & cleanup using gloves is much quicker...Get some!) I begin at my calf area and work down around my ankles & the top of my feet. You can’t blend enough! Work your way up, one leg at a time, paying extra attention to the back of legs. You may not be able to see this area but others can! :-) Same goes for your arms. But I don’t apply the tanner to the underside of my arms. I just subtly blend so there’s no stopping line. When applying the self-tanning lotion to your face, blend-blend-blend near the hair lines & under the chin. Rub all the way to the back of your ears & nape of neck. Don’t get in the eyes. Wash your hands & wait for the results! Most self-tanners suggest waiting 3 hours before applying additional coats. I achieved a natural looking tan after just one application of TOMA’s. I was already fairly tan from the sun however. I’m fairly sure it would take a couple more coats to achieve a desired darkness when I’m “winter white.” Apply your self-tanning lotion for 2 to 4 more days to build the tan you want. After that, a couple of times a week should maintain your tan. Moisturize. Between applications keep your skin moisturized. (TOMA’S Tan Enhancing Lotion helps maintain my tan with it’s beneficial vitamins A, C, & E. It also has gold glisteners in it that helps show off my tan legs.) Any lotion will do. I’ve found that it is time consuming preparing for, applying, & waiting for self-tanning lotion to dry, but it sure beats baking in the sun for hours for the same results!
