to take spring and summer or not toJul 31 '01 (Updated Oct 14 '01) Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line take it only if you have time for the work First I want to start off by saying this was my first time taking spring and summer classes. I was given a choice of taking a six-week course or a seven and a half week course. So what did I do, of course I took the six week class. My spring semester was okay. The teacher was really nice and things seemed to flow smoothly the first week. I have to take the class 3 hours a day four days in a row for six weeks. That was a lot of reading in very little time. My big project crept right up on me and I found myself struggling to get my work done. It seemed like there was hardly time to do anything but the requirements for that class. I was ecstatic when the class was over and really happy with my grade. I waited two weeks and began my summer class. I have three more classes of this class. My summer teacher is really cool. He had to cut out a lot of his material because there just isn't enough time to teach all the information. He openly admits we aren't learning all the material the other students in the fall and winter get. Okay so I miss some information that may hurt later on but hey I can finish class sooner catch up and complete all my classes. I missed the first day, mistake number one. The professor literally handed me five four-page articles and told me the class was to half of a 300-page book complete. Mind you class started on Monday and goes Monday Wednesday. SO that was Wednesday and I was behind. The workload keeps getting bigger and bigger, book after book article after article. Not to mention the presentations we have to do plus quizzes, three major essays, a midterm and a final exam. This is much more work than I anticipated. If you want to get good grades in this class you have to live at home, have no job and no life for literally six whole weeks. I will admit I am doing fine but I don't think I want to take another spring and summer class again. I may be a little behind but the stress level is just too hard for me. I guess if you are strong willed and really need the classes I would recommend you take spring and summer. If you don't like stress and you really don't need to take the class until later, don't. There is nothing worse than a stressed out college kid during the summer. I think I missed out on a lot of fun and relaxing. When I am done I do get three weeks off but then it is back to fall classes, which is a full load. I do have to say that the end result, the degree is the best part well worth the stress and havoc us students have to go through. So when your reading your catalog and not sure just what you want to do, really think hard about the spring and summer and know what you are getting yourself into. It may set you back instead of ahead. Because of my own personal choice to take spring and summer classes I am now closer to graduation and can't wait for the whole college process to be over with. |
