| flindingo's Full Review: Hewlett Packard Color LaserJet 4500 Printer |
I first ran into the HP 4500 at my previous job, and what a pro it was. For a color laser printer around $2000.00, this thing is a wonderful beast. The quality is top notch, and the color is consistent and vibrant.
I used this printer mainly for all my color work, and some of BW stuff. I had a separate printer for the BW jobs (the Laser Jet 4050, read my review on that awesome BW printer) which was closer to my desk so I didn't burden the 4500 with those jobs.
This printer shoots out color in true 600DPI resolution, the colors are bright and always look as good as my original image. The printer has a good 32MB of memory on it, enough to store several jobs, and some good sized images. I used this printer to print up some product packaging sleeves, and I was completely satisfied. First of all I had tried to print it up on my home Deskjet 693c, and the blues came out purple, and the images were noticeably broken down with bad resolution, (even though the 693c is 600DPI as well). Then I did a test run on the 4500 at work, and this time the images were totally sharp, they looked totally professional, and my blues were the same blue as my monitor. It was fantastic!
Apparently DPI on inkjet is totally different than on Laserjet. Also my inkject could print about 40 full color full pages before I needed to change my cartridge, and at $50 a pop, that's just ridiculous! The Laserjet has yet to run out of ink, but the box says something like 35,000 a month. I'm sure it could easily crank out a few hundred or a thousand full color pages, which ends up being much cheaper in the long run! The black just seems to go on forever.
Another great thing about Laser is that it can print on just about any type of paper, transparency, or cardstock. All in all this printer is a great value with tons of features. Of course it's not recommended for home users that only print 1 color image a month or so, then stick with an inkjet, but if you plan on printing a lot, then this is definitely the way to go.
The only bad thing I found is that it takes forever to warm up for color printing, but that doesn't really matter much because the output is so great.
