Life Lessons from a 50 Year Old Gentleman Scholar

Fatherhood requires many characteristics. I have learned three of the most important ones from watching a fellow Epinions member.

E-Prime! (Reply to this comment)
by littlerasco
I very much enjoyed your article. You hit the nail on the head with great insight (the Nick thing). I'm not sure what brought me back to your column, but I was glad to find new things. You are a very GOOD writer, and I am an avid reader. And then I got to the end and was hit with this e-prime thing. It is very intriguing to me that something so prevalent was not even missed as I read. Did you use a list while you wrote, or some other trick? I had to search it out some more and found it comes with a whole philosophy to some. It was quite an eye-opener. So, what IS real? Certainly not “is”!? Anyway, do you have a list of these “verbs of being”? I did an extensive Google search and came up with different lists totaling about 25. Maybe this write-off didn’t include them all. Thanx for the double insights.

You sound like a very loving husband and father, and your family is truly fortunate. I guess I picked a pretty good husband, but a very poor father for my future sons, unintentionally. Sometimes you can't foresee how someone will actually parent.

I wish my sons had had a father with the compassion and love you feel. Needless to say I was a single parent for years, and my kids' Dad has not talked with them for many years. It is very sad, as kids need loving, committed parents, preferably together, but if not together, apart.

Anyway, thank you for sharing this. I'm almost in tears, so I'll close.

Thank YOU for putting the w/o together. I had never heard of E-Prime until this w/o, and I find it an interesting writing style. I can't promise that I will write in E-Prime often, but I am more sensitive to my use of "to be" verbs.

I truly enjoyed this w/o, and reading the other contributions.

What a beautiful contribution to my write-off (Reply to this comment)

and to Epinions itself. And a wonderful tribute to Nick, whom I've also found to be a pillar at this site.

I especially liked your thoughts on the distinction between "kindness" and "love".

You sound like a great parent.

Thanks again for adding a great piece to the write-off,
Karen

way about Nick......What a nice tribute to him and his value here as a friend and writer...
And, I'm sure your children adore you and the relationship you have with them....just taking the time to think about and write your feelings is a fine example of your caring and love....

Great article.

Well deserved recognition (Reply to this comment)

Bret,

What a pleasure to read this beautifully written essay on fatherhood and tribute to one of Epinions' best. Nick certainly deserves this recognition.

I found myself carefully reading and reflecting on your three point advice about fatherhood. You managed to capture many essential factors of parenting in this short list.

I'm embarrassed to say that I'm sometimes quick to head for the computer after work rather than play with the kids. I do lose my temper more often than I would like. Finally, I'm not always consistent. Granted, I'm not a father, but the importance of these points apply well to mothers as well. Thanks for the gentle reminder to keep working on these areas of parenting.

Nice work, Bret!

between "love" and "kindness" among family members.

As usual, it's a pleasure to read your epinion.

P.S. Noticed your new photo, too.

You're right about Nick. I've been enjoying his comments for a little while and he's one of the best writers here, too. Glad I found you through this fun write-off!

"I think your wife and children are fortunate, indeed. "

I keep telling my wife that, but she just rolls her eyes at me ;-)

Thanks for the comment.

Your essay is wonderful prose and the tribute to "St." Nick is indeed well-deserved. Nick is a gentleman, scholar, and a fine example for fatherhood.

Looking forward to reading more of your works!

This was a wonderful Review to read and to absorb. It's not only a great tribute to Nick, but is very revelatory of your inner being. It takes a strong, secure person to draw strength and lessons from another and TO SAY SO!

Thanks for the great reading. I think your wife and children are fortunate, indeed.

Best,

"for your kind words, Bret, and also appreciative of how well you adhered to the E-Prime directive".

The kind words flowed easily. It was writing in E-Prime that stumped me several times.

I really enjoyed your contribution to this write-off. There was one italicized section that was truly poetic. It ended with "I post therefore I exist". The whole review was well done, but that one section was superb.

Well, I hope you are having fun on your birthday.

Best wishes,
Bret

...for your kind words, Bret, and also appreciative of how well you adhered to the E-Prime directive.

Honestly, it'll take me a while to digest your very kind essay. But I do think I could have just easily lauded YOU for the amount of time and energy you have put into writing reviews and essays intended to assist other members of this community.

I guess we'll just have to keep secret the fact that you're actually my son, right? I assume nepotism is against Epinions' TOS. :-)

And -- O irony -- your kind words mean that my contribution to this write-off (about Epinions as a dialectic) actually was right on! You all really DO think I'm nice! I DID manage to reinvent myself and my world online through Epinions! :-)

Thanks again, buddy. I'm sure you don't need lessons from me on being a good father.

cheers,

nick

Isn't it funny how people we've never met can influence our lives? It never ceases to amaze me.
You've written a wonderful tribute to your friend Nick, as well as doing a marvelous job comparing it to parenting.

You never know where you are going to find life lessons. The review is well written, not too sappy, and hits the three most important parts of being a parent, not just a father.
Wonderful job! i look forward to reading more!
