Intriguing idea, mercenary execution
by daviddennis | Aug 08 '05
The ideas behind eHarmony seem intriguing: The system selects matches for you, therefore ensuring some level of compatibility based on the criteria you tell it. Then, the owner of eHarmony electronically guides you through a process by which you get to ...

Bad at refund (Reply to this comment)
by zenat123
They are bad at refund. They give 1 week of free period after that they will not cancel service. I had enrolled with them for six months. I found my match through friends and families within 10 days of enrollment with eharmony. I called to cancel and get my refund. They will not issue a refund since I passed first 7 days. I said that this is 10th day and I only passed 3 days more. And for 3 days, I have to be with this service for six months; of which I am not going to use it.
They are very bad at refund. I will suggest go with some other service.
Unsatisfied Customer,

Just plain awful (Reply to this comment)

AVOID AVOID AVOID! You can't search, you can't set preferences (it says you can, but if you change from the preset preferences it will change them back), and even the preferences listed are pathetically broad. Would you like to meet someone to go bike riding with? You're at the wrong site because physical activity isn't an option to choose from. Would you like to meet someone that weighs in under a metric ton? Again, head elsewhere (don't give me this "soul mate" crap, if I'm physically turned off by someone, that ain't going to change via email chit chat). Would you at least like to meet someone in your vicinity? Well, if by vicinity you mean a 300 (!) mile radius you're all set; forget about trying to change that preference.

To make matters worse, you can't search for someone. You can only plug in your own information and wait for eharmony to "find" someone for you. But don't expect eharmony to really find someone, they have the nasty proclivity to send you emails saying that "So and So" is interested in you, only to find that there is no "So and So" even listed.

And don't even think about asking for help. When I wrote asking how I could find "So and So" I never heard back from them. So I Wrote again. And again, I never heard back from them. And then I tried with another name, and the same thing. Over the several months that i subscribed, not one single question I asked was ever replied to.

I'm the first to admit that I'm a sucker; but eharmony's bogus "interested in you" emails is just plain devious. Eharmony really should be shut down for consumer fraud.

Never used a matching service, (Reply to this comment)

...this is a very informative, thought-through review. By coincidence, the gentleman (with degrees in theology/divinity from Ivy League schools no less) was on NPR last night, being interviewed by Terry Gross - he gave some interesting background information on eHarmony. Also, the SNL parody (MeHarmony?) was mentioned...

Re: I agree about eHarmony.com (Reply to this comment)

As I said, I wanted to experience the communication process for myself, and so I spent my $49.95 so that others wouldn't have to :-).

I think eHarmony suggested that my age range should be something like 38 to 48 and I adjusted it down to 33 to 48. I got only one match under 38, so I'm not sure if the eHarmony matching process is really listening to me.

Ourspace.com appeals to the very young crowd. I'd say about 75% of the users are under 30, and I might be underestimating that percentage. I find it interesting because it allows people to be very expressive in their profiles, the very opposite of eHarmony. And, as I said, I have a definite weakness of liking people in their 20s.

As for the rating, it was indeed a tossup between one and two stars. But I tend to reserve one star for a truly awful consumer experience, like I had with DigiDesign Protools (see that review for details).

Thanks for writing!

I agree about eHarmony.com (Reply to this comment)

But I must tell you I have been getting the three months offer for that same price for almost a year now or maybe longer. I have not jumped at that offer.

I signed up and did the pages of questions and received some matches right away, but the age matches were way off base. I am 45 and not interested in meeting anyone who is 50 .

They would not allow me to lower the age, I could not even see photos. I think the site is a rip off and with the owner making the commercials you know it is not working out. Too cheap to pay someone to try it out and honestly rate it.

Surprised you went with two stars instead of one.

American singles.com just gave a free month and I got to read all the messages that accumulated and still they were all older. I don't get these sites, I specifically state a height, race and age yet they send me matches that are not within my requirements.

I am not familiar with the space site you mentioned, will have to check into that.

Good luck

Interesting review. Maybe I'll have to give it a try. I'm not having a lot of luck hanging my head out the car window as I cruise through mall parking lots, whistling and callin out, "Yo Baby, yo Baby!"
