The Mexico Cell Guide

Aug 01 '01

The Bottom Line The way you intend to use a cell is the way that you will search for a plan.

This guide will help you to look at the most convenient cellular plan at Mexico, the prices vary between the companies, even in the same items, so I decided to bring to you the most significant values. Mostly when you have a contract in the U.S., with a worldwide service company, you have to get another telephone which is compatible to the area what you will be at. This may be annoying to some frequent travelers to Mexico, because the bill of international roaming. Some options that you have are: Signing a Contract or Buying a Prepaid Cell Phone. If you travel once or twice a month I recommend the contract, if not the Prepaid System is maybe your best option.

The approaches are divided by the Best Companies and only in the Prepaid System:

Service Area
Prices
Phones
Customer Service
Added Values

IUSACELL
This has the widest area service in Mexico, practically everywhere, the standard cost per minute is 50 cts, when you made a call, but if you receive a call the charge will be to the person who calls you. This is up to you, and this feature must be programmed when you buy it and changes will be allowed only if you pay the change of the number assigned to you.
The telephones that they offer to you start at 50 usd.(refurbished nokias 5120) to 500usd (brand new motorola vader) and it is up to you, all of them include minutes for free.(Did I say Free???) the cost of the telephone is a mortgage compared to the cost of the minutes, beware at this.
The customer service is very kind, and the operators also speak english too.
The Added values are that if you purchase a 50usd prepaid card you will get a better cost per minute, Call ID, and voice mail. The technology supporting company is Bell Atlantic.

TELCEL
The Area Service is mostly like the Iusacell’s one, the cost per minute and the prepaid system features are the same, the customer service is good. The Added Values are the same, with the difference that they cost about 10 usd. The Technology supporting company and strategic alliances are with Telmex primay and some other. Beware of this one too in the cost of the minutes.

UNEFON
This one is the newest player in the field, so the Area Service is bounded to the primary cities in Mexico, Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Leon, Oaxaca and Acapulco among others, but it is the cheaper option, just as 10cts per minute!!!, It offer also very good equipments such as Nokia, Qyocera and Motorola, all of them have A LOT of minutes included. The customer service is good, but it could be better, the added values are Id Call, Messages Over the Internet, robbery insurance included and voice mail. The activation of this kind of telephones are very easy, and you find the calling cards almost everywhere, also you can buy minutes by internet. The joint ventures of UNEFON are with TV Azteca (the second largest Broadcast in Mexico) and Telefonica de España.

PEGASO
This company has all of above, except the Service Area and Quality of Reception which are bad, the only scheme that may be considered as an added value is that they charge you in fractions of 6 seconds instead of a whole minute.

The Internet addresses of all of above are:
