| moonfizz's Full Review: 1993 Honda Civic del Sol |
I think I just lucked out. My first real car purchase, first loan for anything, was for a 1993 mint green Honda Del Sol Si. Of course, the car was already six years old by the time I could afford it, but you wouldn't have noticed.
If you're looking for a used car that not only gets you where you want to go but looks good doing it, I would go no further than the Del Sol. In my opinion, the Honda line of cars in general is a strong and well-running line. I have also owned a Passport that was a superior vehicle.
My Del Sol has never let me down. Throughout the many years I've owned it, I've never had an instance where the turn of the ignition resulted in anything but a strong purr of the motor. My AAA card has been relatively useless. The car handles corners beautifully. I have a 5-speed model, which helps you to jet off the line when the light turns green (if you're into that sort of thing). The 4-cylinder engine gives plenty of power while using a minimum of gas.
One great feature of the Del Sol is the fact that the convertible top is a hard top. When the top is on, it's like being in a regular car. I have driven in convertables that are very loud with the sound of wind, and have no problems like this. Occasionally if the road is bumpy the top has a weird squeaky rattling as it adjusts. But it's barely noticable. When you want a top-free ride, just take the top off and shove it in the trunk. It might seem a little cumbersome to get the hard top off the car, but I'm only 5 feet tall and it takes me seconds.
My favorite feature of the car is the automatic window in the back. It's supposed to be used mainly for when the car is in convertable mode, to maintain the look of topless. But I keep it down almost all the time. When you're driving and want some breeze without your hair flying everywhere, leaving the side windows up and the back down is extremely refreshing.
I have to be fair and say that there are a few kinks with the car, but that's understandable seeing as the poor thing is going on 14 years old now? First of all, the seal between the windows and the roof have gotten a little weak, meaning when it rains, it can leak. I'm sure I should have gotten that fixed, but seeing as I'm frugal and not above the occasional sit on a garbage bag to avoid a wet butt, it hasn't happened. Also, from years of leaking, there is some water trapped somewhere in the car. Where? I couldn't tell you. But when I go around a sharp corner, it sloshes. I actually kind of enjoy it now, it doesn't affect the car at all and reminds me of the ocean. What other car would provide that for you???
The Del Sol is also a big draw for teenagers looking to pimp out thier ride, but my car is going to stay as-is as long as it's in my possession.
Basically, if you're looking for a used car that you can probably pick up for a steal and that will run without fault, look no further than the Del Sol. Newer cars come and go and I have no interest. As long as my Del Sol wants to keep going, I'll keep driving it.
