So you want to make it memorable?

Aug 02 '01

The Bottom Line Think of what makes them tick, what makes their eyes light up and what drew you to them.

After graduating from college, I worked in radio. It was my life. All my friends were in radio and we liked to sit around and talk about being in radio. It was less of a job and more of an obsession.

One of my radio friends set me up on a blind date with her boyfriend's roommate. He didn't work in radio but I went anyway. We fell in love.

One night he took me for a long drive and we wound up in a state park several counties away. We got out of the car and hiked up a hill. I am not the hiking type so I grumbled the whole way up the hill. I was dragging with me a portable radio because a friend of mine was on the air and, well, I LOVED radio. When we reached the top we sat down to look at the stars and listen to my friend's show.

A few minutes later I heard my radio pal interrupt his show to say, "I'm sitting here with my good friend, Scott, and he has something he would like to say." Over the radio a pre-recorded proposal was played for the better part of my state to hear. After listening I turned to look at this very creative man and found him on one knee with a ring box in his hand. Stunning. Of course, I said yes.

I've heard a lot of engagement stories and maybe I'm partial but I like mine the best. You don't have a way to get your proposal spread through a media source? No problem. There's other lessons to be learned here.

1.)Center the proposal around one of her interests. My work in radio was very special to me. By proposing over the radio it showed me that he understood my passion. Not only does it make it more memorable to the other person but it also helps to show that you "get" that other person. Also, examining interests might help you to get an idea if you can't think of how to propose.

2.)Have the ring (or whatever you've chose to symbolize your commitment) with you when you pop the question. Otherwise it can seem like you're just talking the talk. Also, when the person tells their friends they are going to ask to see the ring. Give them something to show. Can't afford two month's salary right now? Who says you have to spend that much? Spend what you can afford. If they don't like it, you shouldn't be marrying them.

3.)Do something to throw them off balance. My husband distracted me by the hike, the drive and the bats. I did not see it coming. Also, these things kept me from noticing he missed our exit twice, was stuttering, and had a ring box in his pocket.

4.)Now is not the time to hold back feelings. It is hard for a lot of people to say I love you but at a time like this you have to throw caution to the wind and lay your feelings out for all the world to see. It might make the decision between a "no" and a "yes".

5.)Avoid the cliche time of year or go for it. I wouldn't have wanted to be proposed to on Valentines or my birthday or Christmas eve but I know that I have friends who would LOVE it.

I don't work in radio anymore. Ironically, I made the move because of the marriage. Who wants to work evenings, holidays and weekends when you're married to a teacher? Besides a teacher's salary and a radio salary barely allows for two people to eat. I think of my proposal as a perfect moment in time, a great story to encapsulate what was going on in my life.

All in all, think of the person you are proposing to. Plan the moment for them. You might as well get used to doing things for them, with any luck you have 50 or 60 years ahead of you of doing just that.
