| smc1377's Full Review: Hewlett Packard PhotoSmart 7150 InkJet Printer |
I purchased a refurbished 7150 from CompUSA in '04 when they were celebrating, I think, their 10 year anniversary. I bought the printer for a mere $50 and it came with the original packaging and warranty.
At the time, I was using a cheap color printer and had run out of ink, and knowing that ink would cost just as much as buying a new printer that came with ink, I decided to upgrade and risk it with this printer.
I haven't been happier with a printer at home or at work. I didn't get any of the paper loading problems like how other's say that they've experienced, but then I haven't used cheap paper in the printer either. I've only used either bonded regular paper or extra glossy photo paper, neither of which are HP papers.
I experimented by taking a picture to several places for development (Walgreens, Sam's Club, Walmart and Ritz Photo) and then printed that same picture at home on the 7150. I think the Ritz photo felt like the highest quality of them all, but my printed one landed about in the middle of the pack. It's not lab quality, but seems to be better than those kiosk places at some stores.
I love the 6 color printing available on this printer. BUT, I hate that I don't have a true dedicated cartridge for black. I either have to choose between the black cartridge or the photo inks to be used with the regular tri-color cartridge. I wish that the printer would have come with an air-tight device to store extra open cartridges in. My old Canon Bubblejet printer came with this, so if I wanted to print in color, I could put the black cartridge in an air-tight container to save it from drying out.
My other big complaint is that the HP inks are NOT waterproof. They run like crazy when it gets wet, even just little drops of water. I was carrying photo outside when I dropped it face down on the grass. The grass wasn't wet really, just small traces of water but that was enough to make the inks run. I know that their competitors do offer inks that don't run, I wish HP did the same.
For those who complained about the inks costing too much, they should try visiting either HP's website or websites like 123inkets.com. If I was to buy the two color cartridges at the store seperately, one would cost $25 and the other would cost $35 typically, which is expensive. But on HP's website, you can buy a combo package that has both ink cartridges for $40 and right now, it comes with 100 sheets of free 4x6 photo paper. Now that's a great deal.
It's also very interesting to watch the printer print cause it has a blue photo-eye (I believe) that can sense the paper to ensure quality prints.
For those of you who have cameras that support the pict-bridge function, you can print photos directly from your camera via a special cable. All my cameras have this function, though I've only used it once to try to see if it works. Otherwise, I like to touch them up on the computer first before printing.
