Re: Anime is OFFENSIVE (Reply to this comment)

I have 860 DVDs, 200 anime. That leaves 660 in the Made in American and Europe department.

So, it is not an obsession with anime at all, I like it in many cases that it is willing to go places that Western media simply isn't. There was enough hooplah over Harry Potter, how would it go over if someone did a piece on Shinto or hinted at a world of polythesiesm?

Huge eyes are hardly a piece of racist rhetoric, but a deep seeded identity crisis in Japan. That nation has found itself to be ugly and inferior to the United States, a problem stemming from the defeat of WW2. A military defeat, and a defeat to their pride. So, they seem to view us as superior, while externally goading to make up for it.

Suckered into it? I seriously doubt it, Hollywood has a stronger vice grip in American society.

On a side note, I am surprised anyone bothered to write a comment here a full two years after it being published, let alone me coming along and seeing it to respond.

Anime is OFFENSIVE (Reply to this comment)
by fl-red61
Earlier this morning, I had a discussion with two anime fans at the office. I told them I found anime offensive (not for the violence, but mainly for the large "American" eyes and the way the women are always barely clothed and large breasted). It turns out I'm not alone.

Turn this around for a moment -- say the United States exported something that included such blatant racism. Please include yourself in the targeted minority, and ask yourself how long it would be before that targeted ethnic group was in an uproar for the United States to change their racist practices? How long would it be before someone got sued? How long would it be before that exported item was expunged?

Do I hate all anime? Yes -- there is very little intrinsic value.

Do I hate all movies? No -- I'll bet my DVD collection is larger than yours, and you'll find a wide variety of films in my collection.

Anime is obviously targeting weaknesses in teenage boys; some teenage boys never grow up. An educated man would recognize someone taking advantage of him -- do you?

POWER TO THE PEOPLE! (Reply to this comment)

That a way, Laugh. I'm sick and tired of those people that take anime (not to mention the entire category of animation itself) either an overly violent and disgusting genre or a genre for kids. It seems that the USA has come to a time in its life that cartoons can only be limited to fart jokes or fluffy bunnies. Damn them! Damn them!!!! ARGH!

BTW, great editorial :)

Great Review! (Reply to this comment)

Your review was short, to the point and well written. I wish that other people in this country would get through their thick skulls that anime is only one thing. It is a medium not a genera Darnit!

People in this country have a long way to go before animation can be accepted as a method of storytelling like it is in Japan.

For some of my views (shameless plug time) please check out my two-part essay under the same subject. This essay goes in-depth about animation and comics both here and in Japan (end shameless plug).

Thanks for the good article!
