CompUSA: A nice place to visit, but when you BUY, buy from Dell or Gateway
by Ed.Williamson | Aug 02 '01
Buy your computer software and supplies at CompUSA, but be very careful about buying an actual computer there; look to the major mail-order retailers for that.

Sweet- there is some legitimate confusion here. Epinions has a section under hardware which lists CompUSA's own brand of computers. But then there is a separate category which asks about "What you should know about CompUSA computers in general." There are 2 ways to interpret that statement. You can take it to mean when you walk into a CompUSA store and you see "their" computers, "their" computers are everything "they" (CompUSA) is selling under their roof, such as their Hewlett Packard computers, their Compaqs, and all of "their" other computers-including the house brand ones they have for sale. This is the way I took the topic to mean considering how the description regarding the Epinions topic was
given. IF the epinions topic had been "What you need to know specifically about CompUSA-brand computers" I would have regarded that as a direction to write solely about that brand of computer. But since the Epinions title said, in essence "their" computers and also used the words "in general" I read it that they were talking about any of CompUSA's computers, which I think is a valid and legal and ok interpretation. The Epinions police and some epinionators may see it differently, but that's their problemo. Most seem to agree with me. BTW keep up your own excellent and prolific epinions; they are always appreciated.

CompUSA has its own line of computers and I believe this is more of what the question was supposed to be about...... still good information though..

Thanks iBen. We see this the same way. (BTW I did not leave out Apple intentionally. Apple makes a fine computer, as you know. It's a shame that, like my technologically excellent Sony Betamax VCR and Camcorder of old, that the different proprietary format of Apple, apart from the PC world, keeps it from the sales/user mainstream just like my Betamax stuff was cut out of the VHS world.)

I cringe when I hear about people buying their computers at these "superstores" like CompUSA. Occasionally, you will get the salesperson who actually wants to help you, but in my experience, when it comes to buying the actual computer, salespeople are vultures.

I work for Apple Computer from time to time as an Demo Day Representative. On special days, Apple sends enthusiasts like me into retail chains like CompUSA, The Wiz, and Circuit City to demonstrate and promote their products. I got to work with sales people and observe the actual sales process.

At Circuit City, one sales associate explained to me that sales people should try NOT to explain too much about the computer. The idea is to sell the customer a computer with the least amount of effort on the part of the salesman. So you get alot of people buying expensive stuff, like the DVD-ROM instead of a CD-RW, because commission is higher when that happens.

Its amazing how cutthroat sales can be when you throw in the concept of commission. Though a particular computer may be right for a customer, a sales associate may try to lure the customer to a more commission friendly machine instead...

Like I said before, vultures. Does this mean that all sales people in all of these stores are like this? No of course not. I've met plenty of sales people at CompUSA who would bend over backward to help. However, shopping at a computer store like that alone isn't suggested, and really, taking a knowledgeable computer-saavy person along can never hurt.

Good advice!
