| mxy15's Full Review: Reference Studio/40 Speaker (Gold) |
Paradigm Reference Studio 40 v.2 is possibly the best bookshelf speakers out there for the price. For people who have never seen the Studio 40's, be advised that this is not your average small bookshelf speaker. It is quite tall at 21-1/2in and weights a hefty 40lbs each. This should give you some idea about how well the speaker is constructed. The speaker is bi-wire/bi-amp able with two sets of binding post in the back. It is my suggestion that you at least bi-wire the Studio 40's because it makes a noticeable difference in sound.
Of course the construction of the speaker only tells part of the story. The most important question is how it sounds. Personally, I think they sound fantastic. The sound is very transparent and neutral. Sound comes through as if the musicians are right in front of you with nothing in between. The high is a bit bright but I think this is compounded by the fact that I have a bright receiver. (I have an Integra 5.1) But since this is the kind of sound I like, to me it is not a problem. When I listen to the 40's in my dealer it was hooked up to an Anthem AMP2, a hybrid stereo amplifier, the sound was noticeably warmer. So if you have Denon or Marantz receivers the sound should not be as bright as mine. The bass of the 40's is tight and accurate and it is never distorted but it doesn't reach down very far. So if you're into bass, make sure you pair the 40's with a good subwoofer or look elsewhere.
Another thing about Paradigm Reference is that you can only buy them at authorized dealers so it is hard to find a deal on these gems. However, if you live near the boarder to Canada you can find these babies at a significant discount due to the favorable exchange rate and tax refund. And always try to negotiate; I was able to save an additional 20% off list so you know there is a big margin for the dealers.
