Break in your glove
Aug 03 '01
The Bottom Line Play catch!
I've broken in many gloves over the past few years. I play college baseball and have gotten a new glove just about every year....or more. The best way to break it in is to really just play catch. Everybody says to oil it or dip it in hot water or put it in the oven. This isn't bad for it, but that glove oil seems to me to only put a shine on the leather more than actually soften the glove. Try getting a new catchers glove and see how much putting an ounce of oil on the thing helps.....not much. Play catch! As much as you can stand. I use shaving cream to soften the leather cause it doesn't add weight like oil does.....and I don't want to dip something I just paid $200 bucks for into a bucket of water or put it into the oven. The waters weighs it down A LOT and the heat softens it only temporarily. Play catch use shaving cream or oil to keep softening it, flex it a lot, put a ball in the pocket and tie it up..... Make sure you break it in so it's comfortable on your hand and you have a good pocket. The thumb should bend near the middle finger, not to the pinky! Good luck
