Top 10 Jewish Heritage Films by janesbit1 | Aug 03 '01 It's difficult to determine what a Jewish heritage movie is since the film industry has many Jewish producers and directors. These 10 are directly related to Jewish culture, however.Return to opinion

My grandparents, who never see movies in the theater, saw this one and thought it was very good. Nice list.

Do you know that Martin Landau was in B.A.P.S. with Halle Berry in the mid eighties or so? I don't remember the date, but I reviewed it as a cute letter to mattjoe if you're interested, hehe.
Some copying and pasting to your latest essay, I see. Funny to see The 10 Commandments make both lists. Thanks for great advice.

I love the fact that you mentioned how heavy the entertainment industry is with Jewish producers, directors, actors, etc... Aside from Adam Sandler's parody, I doubt if many realize the contributions made.
Woody Allen, Neil Simon, Mel Brooks and other greats may perpetuate the stereotype but they also help enlighten through laughter. As far as I am concerned, your list is comprehensive considering the wealth of films produced over the years. Bravo!

But where's...? (Reply to this comment)

OK, I know that everyone will have (differing) another one or two s/he feels you should have included. Mine is "Europa, Europa." If I were doing a list, "The Fixer" would probably make it, too.

Argument over Jewish heritage being cultural or religious is age old and never ending... It's an extremely broad category, and I see no point in attempting to get Epinions or anyone to pin it down definitively... Here are ten movies that deal with Jewish heritage in some form; however, if I were to list the films that I personally would watch and re-watch from such a genre... 80% of them would be Woodie Allen films.

Informative and thought-provoking... (Reply to this comment)

I guess it's time for me to make a run to the nearest video rental shop. The only movies on your list that I've seen are Fiddler and Schindler's List. Great work--thought-provoking and very interesting.
One question, though--isn't Jewish Heritage a really broad category? I thought that Judaism isn't so much of a culture/heritage as a religion, so how exactly is the term Jewish heritage defined? For example, do Ethiopian Jews consider the Holocaust tragedy or the founding of Israel as an independent state again a part of their heritage since they are Jewish, although they are not European?
Thanks,
mel
