If you need to hire fast, take on a contractor... it's better in the long run to take your time when hiring an employee.

I agree and the best way to avoid time wasting interviews is to insist on a telephone interview first. You know in the first 60 seconds whether the role is for you or not. It will save you money and time.

I believe you mean if there are MORE than 15 employees. According to memory, it is 20+ in the UK.

My point was not that I care about whether someone is gay or not but, rather, that one would bring their sexuality up at an interview. I have never walked into an interview and said "by the way, I'm hetrosexual... is that a problem?" My main concern when hearing him say this was "why is he saying this? Is he trying to set us up?" Sounds like drama to me. It's just not the corporate appearance an employer seeks.

Everyone discriminates on the basis of sex, race, personality, appearance, voice etc. That's how we choose 1 person out of 20 applicants. It's how we choose friends, partners and associates. This is how humans make decisions... by applying their own personal tastes and choices and discriminating. Just because one cannot legally discriminate on certain grounds (race, sex, marital status etc.), does not mean that discriminating is wrong or "morally bad". It simply means it is illegal. All that is illegal is not morally wrong, it is simply legally wrong.

"We were considering one older gentleman who said at the last minute "I'm gay, is that a problem?" Of course, it wasn't until he told us! Sexuality is something that should simply not be raised at an interview!"

In the USA, you can be sued for violating the equal employment opportunity laws if there are less than 15 employees in your company. The eeo laws in Europe are similar. discrimination is morally bad for you.

Just go... (Reply to this comment)

When I had first graduated from tech college with a secretary degree, I went to work with a temp agency. One job interview they sent me on was a 'design assistant' with experience in Access/Excel computer program.
The interview and job was way out of my league-and I am sure my answers to the interview's questions showed that.
The temp agency should have checked out my qualifications/ & the job qualifications before sending me onward to a interview slaughter.
Needless to say, the potential company should have researched this temp agency before signing a contract with them for temp help.
