Good general guide (Reply to this comment)
by vplite
This is a good general article for someone thinking about building their own system. Other Epinions get into much more detail, for those who still want to have a go at it.
Reading and understanding this article should serve as the first few steps on a "journey of 1000 miles". Or let the reader know that this is a trip they can't or don't want to take.
I know a lot of serious computer geeks who would not build their own.
I would add two points :
1)If you count all of the research that should be done, including price shopping and board lurking, most of us will be "paying ourselves" only a dollar or two an hour in cost savings, maybe less, considering you will be your own 24-7 tech support.
2)The real payoff comes in the pride of having put together your own system, and the knowledge gained in that process. That is priceless.
You didn't get into a lot of specifics, but that was not your intent. Some good tips, though. Good job!

......you have included a lot of the advice that I was looking for when I started building systems for folks a couple of years ago. It can be frustrating at times, but it is almost always satisfying in the end when it works!
great piece.

Great attention to detail. I especially appreciate the cooling mention. I feel all newer socket a chips could use a beefy heatsink, some artic silver paste and a nice fan - overclock or not.
I know my 1.1 and 1.2 t-birds ran hot even at base speed.
I hope the less technically inclined folks can appreciate this piece for the knowledge and work that went in.
