Curtis,

You don't have to be a great writer to have fun at Epinions. All you need is enthusiasm and motivation--both of which you have. I see from reading this article that you truly enjoy writing reviews and that indeed you work hard to make sure these reviews are up to par. (Hey, if it makes you feel better, nobody in Epinions is perfect. Even the best writers sometimes make grammatical mistakes such as double negatives and whatnot.)

About revenge raters, don't worry about them. They do indeed stick out like a sore thumb, especially when your review receives positive ratings with even some lauds from fellow peers, yet you see that one lowly rating.

I like your positive attitude and I think that this is certainly an important quality in Epinions--and in real life.

Take care,
Shadow8

I generally get only a revenge rating or two per month. (Reply to this comment)
by Horswispr
Usually, they're anonymous, and don't have any effect on the overall rating of one of my pieces. It's probably because I mostly read good writers, and don't have to give SHs or NHs that often. Revenge rating is less a problem on this site than on others. If you wanted to see revenge rating brutality, you should have been involved with BrightIdea a few months ago, when bad writing and reading circles ruled. Ratings were anonymous, making things even worse.

Actually all the revenge raters that have visited me so far are quite bold... no hiding. Quite amusing. But bring'em on! It's a little annoying but I agree ya just gotta ignore'em like your title says. Thanks for commenting!

Yup I put a lot of effort into my reviews. This is a great way for me to exercise my brain since I'm heading back to school in the fall.

Thanks for the very kind comments! See... that's why I mentioned you! ;)

You got that right, the revenge raters and people who are just plain rude are the minority... big time! Which is a good thing!

Ignore em' (Reply to this comment)

What's truly amazing is that the revenge raters know how childish it is. Otherwise, they wouldn't hide their name. Now, if they could take their knowledge of the fact that it's childish, put it together with their actions, revenge rating wouldn't exist. Oh well. I always have to laugh when I see a review with 150 VHs and one NH. Like they're really making an impact.

I certainly don't expect everyone to have perfect English skills. I don't so. . . can't expect that of anyone else. I appreciate that you read your reviews a couple of times through. I wish everyone did that!

Thanks for a very helpful review!

well thanks for the name drop. It's a pleasure reading your stuff. As long as you rate honestly you'll see many revenge raters, but you'll also find many/multiple more respectable and moral ones like those you listed.

I am new too (Reply to this comment)

Only been here a few weeks I guess. My first few reviews weren't that great at all, but I am doing a lot better now. I did get lower ratings on those first few, but they did deserve it, and I certainly didn't go revenge rating over it. I did go read and rate those who rated mine - I still do - and I rated theirs fairly. If someone takes the time to read and rate something I did, I will return the favor. But I don't automatically give VH just because they rated mine that way.
I have read all of your reviews here so far and have enjoyed them all. And your first ones were a lot better than mine. =)
And I have a dictionary handy here when I'm doing mine because I'm not the best speller. I seem to keep messing up the same words. Oh well..maybe someday I'll get them right. =)

Cherry Coke is unfortunately not available in Calgary or around Alberta (at least anywhere that I know of). When I was down in Disneyland in 1998 with a close friend of mine, I drank tons of Cherry Coke rofl!! YUMMY!!

We have 3 cats in our house, so every once in a while one of them will jump on my lap for a bit. But my cat (Igor) much prefers if I play with him by tossing his cotton ball toys around lol! :) Thanks for the comments!

I can feel that energy fading a little already. When I wrote my first draft of my Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls review last night, I found myself drifting a lot. It was not pretty rofl!

WOO HOO KICKBACKS!!!

Revenge Ray-ters (Reply to this comment)
by xeno3998
Thanks for the mention Curtis, your kickback's in the mail ;)

As for the revenge raters, I just ignore them and block them. I find that, even though I am a decent enough person in terms of rating, nobody is above criticism if they're NHed or SHed by me. I get endless flame emails about my reading and rating procedure and I
almost laugh at the egos of these people. NH and SH revenge raters, that is.

Anyway, good points made. You've still got that beginner's energy to Epinions and I envy you for that. After you've been here for a year like I have you start losing spirit, and getting more addicted as it happens. Hard to explain, but you'll know what I mean someday :)

Great Point. . . (Reply to this comment)
by mommykim
I, too, am fairly new to Epinions. My first reviews were terrible, but thanks to many helpful folks I have picked up some great tips and I continue to learn and become a better Epinionator!

HEY--I prefer Cherry Coke for my choice writing beverage, and you should try letting the kitty sit on your lap. It's great company! ;-)

Keep up the good work!

You write really well, and in an interesting way. I can see that you're a perfectionist and so you might have a hard time living up to your own standards (of writing, I mean).

Sorry for the personal remark. Couldn't help it. I was a psychology major.

I am fairly new to writing Epinions also, and am not the best writer in the world. Don't think I ever will be, but I have received comments which are really helpful one of the people I have found helpful is Susie-34668. You might want to check some of her reviews out yourself if you haven't already. Good luck with your future reviews.

Yep it could have gone in advice on rating, but I felt this is more general comments about Epinions from me.

I realize anyone, girls or boys, of any age, can be very capable of writing excellent work. I was just using that as an example to point out how I decided on a rating. She had clearly indicated she was very young and not very good at English, but did put what looked like a good effort into writing reviews, so I took that into account.

Thanks for the comments! :)

Hmm... (Reply to this comment)
by Andrew_Lim
nice work, but maybe this review would be more relevant in the "Deciding How To Rate Reviews" section. Just as a side note: I don't really think girls are necessarily worse at writing game reviews...I know of several who are excellent in that sector! :)

I guess it's tough to decide when a rating should be lenient. I personally go easier on a writer when they are young, or if English does not appear to be their first language. I'm just glad to see people actually bother...and dare to try.
