FIREWALLS!! Your Only barrier against Evil!!Aug 04 '01 Write an essay on this topic.The Bottom Line Get a firewall? Oh god get a firewall!! WHAT IS A FIREWALL? If you want to learn about firewalls you've come to the right place. I am an extremely experienced computer user of many years and am very knowlegable in the field of computer security. These days computers are being used to transmit many types of information, emails, credit card numbers, social security numbers, online purchases, passwords, etc.. You may think you are safe just because you have the latest antivirus on your computer, but guess again, you're not. Antivirus only go so far to protect you against viruses, but is not -100 Percent Effective-.. Everyday malicious computer users are modifying the makeup of computer viruses and trojans to advoid dectection by you're antivirus. Trojans can be used to transmit personal information from you're computer to the -hacker-. Just think about it, a program called -SUB_SEVEN- is able to do a range of things to compromise computer security and privacy, such as, transmit credit card numbers, log keys(that's right every single key pressed on your computer can be transmitted to the hacker), open and close your cd-rom. Virtually giving the hacker full control of your computer.. Now lets get to the point, let's say you download a program infected with one of these trojans or viruses.. And the virus goes undected into you're system, without you even knowing it. You're only protection now is the trusty firewall... A firewall controls the transmission of computer information between programs to different computers. You can control what programs have access to the internet and what programs do not, plus- they block malicious or unkown programs from gaining access to the internet, therefore increasing user privacy. And that's what a firewall is and why you should have one.. If you need me to clarify some things for you just leave a comment and I will eventually get to it...
